Andre Dirrell (born September 7, 1983 in Flint , Michigan ) is an American boxer .
amateur
Dirrell was one of the most successful amateur boxers in the USA. In 2001 he won the US championships (U-19) in lightweight, the US championships in featherweight, the US challenge in featherweight and the National Police Athletic League in light welterweight. In 2002 he lost to Lamont Peterson in the quarterfinals of the US Championships and won a bronze medal at the National Golden Gloves light welterweight.
In 2003 he became the US middleweight champion and won the US Challenge again. After winning the American Olympic qualifying tournament in Tijuana , he was nominated to represent the USA for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens . After two clear wins in the preliminary round, he managed a narrow 12:11 point win in the quarterfinals against the Cuban Yordanis Despaigne , to whom he was defeated in the first round of the Pan American Games in 2003. In the semifinals he met Gennady Golovkin and lost to the Kazakhs on points (23:18), which earned him the bronze medal. Dirrell's record was 214-22.
Professional career
After the games, the southpaw / switch hitter switched to the professional camp and made his debut in the super middleweight division on January 27, 2005 in Glen Burnie . In one of his first fights he was on the ground and, like his brother, is considered a bit sloppy or reckless. His younger brother Anthony Dirrell , a much better puncher, is also a professional boxer.
Andre Dirrell was a participant in the Super Six World Boxing Classic tournament. On October 17, 2009 Andre Dirrell fought against the unbeaten Carl Froch from England, who was world champion according to the WBC version. Direll just lost on points (113-114 115-112 115-112). His next opponent in the tournament on March 28, 2010 was Arthur Abraham, unbeaten in 31 fights . Abraham fell in the fourth round of the fight for the first time in his professional career. In the eleventh round, Abraham - clearly lagging behind on points - beat Dirrell, who was kneeling on the floor of the ring, who had previously slipped. Dirrell showed impact and was examined by the ring doctor. The referee decided after a break in the fight on the disqualification of Abraham due to a deliberate foul.
In 2011 Dirrel won a fight against Darryl Cunningham by knockout in the second round.
