Lamont Peterson (born January 24, 1984 in Washington, DC ) is an American professional boxer , former world champion of the WBA and IBF light welterweight, as well as former WBA world welterweight champion.

Amateur career

He won the 2001 National Lightweight Golden Gloves . He beat Rickie Torres, Jeremy Drapal, Ross Anderson, Backlin Medrano and Juan Suazo. At the national U-19 championships held in the same year, he reached 2nd place in the light welterweight division. He was only inferior to Juan McPherson on points in the final.

In 2002 he was able to win the US U-19 light welterweight championships. He beat Tim Coleman from Maryland in the final. In 2002 he won the bronze light welterweight medal at the US Championships in Las Vegas . He defeated Andre Dirrell and did not lose until the semi-finals against Rock Allen . However, he defeated this in the final of the 2003 US light welterweight championships.

At the "Olympic Trials", the national qualifying tournament for the 2004 Summer Olympics , he was again defeated by Rock Allen and thus could not qualify.

Professional career

In September 2004 he played his first professional fight and remained undefeated for more than five years. He defeated a number of build-up opponents , but also demanding challenges. In November 2007 he defeated the Ecuadorian Humberto Toledo (31 wins - 4 losses) by knockout in the first round. In January 2008 he won unanimously on points against the undefeated Brazilian Antonio Mesquita (34-0).

On April 25, 2009 he boxed in Puerto Rico for the interim world title of the WBO and won against the undefeated Willy Blain (20-0) by tKo in the seventh round. On December 12, 2009 he was able to box for the regular WBO world title against Timothy Bradley (24-0), but was subject to this on points.

After a subsequent knockout win against Damian Fuller (30-6), he reached a draw in December 2010 against Victor Ortiz (28-2). In July 2011 he defeated Victor Manuel Cayo (26-1) by knockout in the twelfth round and received another title chance against Amir Khan (26-1) in December 2011 .

Amir Khan was listed as number 2 in the world rankings and denied the sixth defense of his WBA title and the first defense of his IBF title against Peterson. In the first round Peterson went down twice through left hooks and was counted once, but surprised from the second round with good body hits, which repeatedly forced Khan to take unclean actions in the infight. By unauthorized pushing away of the opponent, Khan received points deductions in rounds 7 and 12, which ultimately cost him the victory and made Peterson the new WBA / IBF world champion.

A rematch was canceled in May 2012 after a doping test found synthetic testosterone in Peterson's urine. This justified himself by saying that he was already taking it in October 2011 and for medical reasons. The world association WBA, however, recognized him from the title and appointed Amir Khan again as the old and new superchampion.

He defended the remaining IBF title on February 22, 2013 through tKo in the eighth round against ex-WBO world champion Kendall Holt (28-5). On May 18, 2013 he lost after three knockdowns by tKo in the third round against Lucas Matthysse (33-2). His world title was not at stake as the welterweight fight was taking place.

On January 25, 2014, he unanimously defended the IBF World Championship title against Dierry Jean (25-0) and on August 9 by tKo against Edgar Santana (29-4). In April 2015 he lost on points to Danny García (29-0). The IBF Association then withdrew the world title from him.

On October 17, 2015, he defeated the previously undefeated Felix Diaz (17-0). In February 2017 he managed to win a points against Dawid Awanessjan (22-1) and thus win the WBA world welterweight title. However, he resigned this in October 2017.

On January 20, 2018 he lost prematurely to Errol Spence (22-0) and on March 24, 2019 also prematurely to Sergei Lipinez (14-1).
