Errol Spence junior (born March 3, 1990 in Dallas ) is an American professional boxer and world champion of the IBF (May 2017) and WBC (September 2019) welterweight . The Ring magazine named him the best active welterweight boxer in 2018.
Amateur career
He started boxing in 2005 at the age of 15 and won the Texas State Silver Gloves that same year. In 2008 he was American youth welterweight champion, and in 2009, 2010 and 2011 American welterweight champion. He also won the National Golden Gloves in 2009 and came second at the same event in 2010. He also won the French 4-Nations Tournament in Berck with a final victory over Taras Schelestjuk and won the US Olympic qualification in 2011.
In 2012 he took part in the 30th Summer Olympics in London , where he defeated Myke Carvalho from Brazil 16:10 in the preliminary round and made it to the round of 16. There he met the Indian Vikas Krishan , who he lost with 13:15 just on points. After the American team protested and the AIBA evaluated the video recordings , the world association corrected the verdict to a 15:13 victory for the American. According to AIBA, several fouls by the Indian and the resulting point gains for Spence were not taken into account. In the quarter-final fight that followed, the aim was to get into the semi-finals and thus secure an Olympic medal. However, Spence lost this duel with 11:16 against the Russian Andrei Samkowoi , whom he had defeated shortly before the Olympic Games at the chemistry cup in Halle .
He made further international appearances in 2008 at the 1st Youth World Championships in Guadalajara , where he was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Boturjon Machmudow from Uzbekistan after he had previously beaten Alex Theran from Colombia and Taras Makarov from Ukraine. At the 15th World Championships in Milan , he lost in the first fight against Carlos Banteur from Cuba. At the 16th World Championships in Baku 2011, he prevailed against Amin Ghasemipour from Iran, Custio Clayton from Canada and Balázs Bácskai from Hungary, before failing in the quarter-finals against Serik Säpijew from Kazakhstan.
He finished his amateur career in 2012 with 135 wins from 147 fights.
Professional career
Under Golden Boy Promotions from Óscar de la Hoya , he switched to the professional camp and won his first fight on November 9, 2012 by knockout in the third round. In April 2015 he won against Samuel Vargas (20-1). In June 2015, he also managed a victory by TKo in the third round against Phil Lo Greco (26-1). In September 2015 he beat Chris van Heerden (23-1) by TKo in the eighth round. He won another early win in November 2015 against Alejandro Barrera (28-2).
