Leonard Bundu (born November 21, 1974 in Freetown , Sierra Leone ) is an Italian professional boxer and former EBU European welterweight champion.

Amateur career

The 1.69 m tall southpaw is the son of a Sierra Leonean and an Italian and started boxing at the age of 15. He was Italian light middleweight champion in 1998 and 2002 and also won three times (1997, 1998, 2002) the international Trofeo Italia tournament in Naples . He defeated, among others, Dorel Simion and Marian Simion . At the multinational tournament in Liverpool in 2000 , he reached second place and defeated Dejan Zavec in the quarter-finals .

In 1997 he won the welterweight gold medal at the Mediterranean Games in Bari and in 1999 a bronze welterweight medal at the World Championships in Houston . He defeated Wadim Mesga from Belarus, Parkpoom Jangphonak from Thailand and Nurschan Smanow from Kazakhstan before losing 5: 7 in the semifinals to Juan Hernández from Cuba.

In 2000 he took part in the welterweight division at the Summer Olympics in Sydney . He defeated the Australian Daniel Geale in the preliminary round , but lost to the Kazakh Danijar Munaitbassow in the second round.

Professional career

He turned pro in 2005 and won each of his ten fights by the end of 2006. In March 2007 he won the IBF Association's Mediterranean Welterweight Championship, and in March 2008 the Italian Championship. In March 2009 he won the EU Championship and in March 2010 the Intercontinental Championship of the WBA .

On November 4, 2011, he secured the European welterweight championship against the undefeated Daniele Petrucci (28-0) and defended the title against Antonio Moscatiello (13-0), Stefano Castellucci (20-1), Ismael El Massoudi (37-4) ), Rafał Jackiewicz (42-10) and Lee Purdy (20-4).

On August 1, 2014, he defeated the undefeated Englishman Frankie Gavin (19-0) over twelve rounds on points. On December 14, 2014, Leonard Bundu lost to the undefeated Keith Thurman (23-0) on points. The fight was about the interim world championship of the WBA .

In April 2016, he won the EBU European title again with an early win against the Finn Jussi Koivula (19-2). In August 2016 he lost to Errol Spence (20-0) by knockout in the sixth round .
