Marian Simion (born September 14, 1975 in Bucharest ) is a former Romanian amateur boxer in welterweight (63.5-67 kg), light-middleweight (67-71 kg) and middleweight (71-75 kg). His greatest successes were a 3rd place at the 1996 Olympic Games, a 3rd place at the 1997 World Championships, 1st place at the 1999 World Championships, 2nd place at the 2000 Olympic Games, and 2nd place at the World Championships 2001.

He comes from a Roma family and is the older brother of Dorel Simion (* 1977), who also practiced boxing and won a bronze medal at the 2000 Olympic Games.

Boxing career

At the 1995 World Championships in Berlin , he was defeated in the welterweight division in the second preliminary round to the world champion and two-time Olympic champion Oleg Saitow just 4: 5 on points.

In April 1996 he became vice European welterweight champion in Vejle, Denmark . He defeated Georgi Matew from Bulgaria and József Nagy from Hungary early in the preliminary rounds, won the quarterfinals by 8-2 against Wadim Mesga from Belarus and the semifinals by 6-2 against his rival Oleg Saitow. Only in the final did he lose 4:10 against Hasan Al, who started for Denmark .

In August 1996, he was also participants of the 26th Summer Olympic Games of Atlanta . In the preliminary round he defeated the French Hussein Bayram 13: 6, in the second round the American Fernando Vargas 8: 7, in the quarterfinals finally Hasan Al 16: 8, before he defeated the Cuban Juan Hernández 17:20 in the semi-finals lost and thus won a bronze medal in the welterweight division.

Another bronze medal in welterweight he won in October 1997 at the World Championships in Budapest . After beating Amin Asikainen in the quarter-finals, he moved into the semi-finals, where he finally lost on points to Serhiy Dsindsiruk .

At the European Championships in Minsk in 1998 , he had to admit defeat to Oleg Saitov on points in the semifinals and thus got out with the bronze medal in the welterweight division.

In 1999 he won the world light middleweight title in Houston . His defeated opponents included the 6-time English champion Chris Bessey, the French European champion Frédéric Esther and the later Olympic champion Jorge Gutiérrez .

In 2000 he took part as the reigning light middleweight world champion at the 27th Olympic Games in Sydney , where he won against Ciro Di Corcia (19: 8) from Italy, José Luis Zertuche (knockout) from Mexico, Frédéric Esther (K. o.) From France and Pornchai Thongburan (26:16) from Thailand made it into the final. There he met the Kazakh Yermachan Ibraimow , to whom he was defeated by just 23:25 and thus landed on the 2nd place. In the same year he was awarded the Order of Loyalty to the rank of knight.

Also at the World Championships 2001 in Belfast , he landed on the 2nd place in the light middleweight division. He defeated among others the later European champion Andrei Mischin and the reigning European champion Bülent Ulusoy . In the final he lost to Cuban Damián Austin on points .

At the 5th Goodwill Games 2001 in Brisbane , Australia , he won the silver medal in the light middleweight division; he only had to admit defeat to the Cuban Damian Austin again just 9:10 in the final.

At the 2002 European Championships in Perm , he won a bronze medal in the light middleweight division. This time he was defeated by Andrei Mishin in the semi-finals.

In June 2004 he won the 2nd EU Championship in Madrid with a middleweight final against Andy Lee from Ireland .

At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens he started in the middleweight division, but was already defeated in the preliminary round to the Egyptian and three-time winner of the African Games , Ramadan Yasser with 24:36.
