career

Hernández won his first major international title in Havana in 1987 when he was junior lightweight world champion. There he defeated Kostya Tszyu from the Soviet Union in the final .

In 1988 and 1989 he lost to Siegfried Mehnert at the Chemistry Cup . His four victories at world championships came in 1991 in Sydney (final victory over Andreas Otto ), in 1993 in Tampere (9: 3 point final victory over Vitalijus Karpačiauskas from Lithuania , in the semifinals he knocked out Andreas Otto from Ahlen with 11: 4), 1995 in Berlin (final victory over Oleg Saitow ) and 1999 in Houston . At the 1997 World Cup in Budapest, he was defeated by the Russian Saitov in the semifinals.

At the 1999 World Championships , the jury evaluated the final against Timur Gaidalow, Russia , initially for this, but after Cuba's protests and the departure of the entire Cuban delegation, the judgment reversed and scored the fight for Hernández.

His appearances at the Olympic Games were somewhat less successful, with three participations failing to win a gold medal. In 1992 in Barcelona he failed in the final against Michael Carruth from Ireland and had to be satisfied with silver. In 1996 in Atlanta he won silver again after losing to Saitow in the final and in Sydney in 2000 he failed in the quarter- finals against the eventual winner Jermachan Ibraimow from Kazakhstan .

Hernández was from 1990 to 1997 and 2000 Cuban welterweight champion. Further successes included two victories each at the Central American and Caribbean Games (1990 and 1993), the Pan American Games (1991 and 1999) and at World Cup tournaments (1990 and 1998).
