Career

amateur

Gould was American welterweight champion from 1985 to 1987 (-67 kg).

In 1985 Gould was a bronze medalist at the Junior World Championships (U19). In an international match against the Cuban national team, he went the following year against Juan Carlos Lemus , Cuba , but had to admit defeat to this. At the World Championships in the same year, Gould fought his way to victory over Kunihiro Miura, Japan (5: 0), Laurent Boudouani , France (5: 0), Tibor Molnar, Hungary (5: 0), and in the final over Candelario Duvergel , Cuba (3: 2), surprisingly the world title. The following year he won the silver medal at the North American Championships and the Pan American Games , as he had to admit defeat Lemus each.

At the Olympic Games in 1988 Gould reached after victories over Joseph Marva, Tanzania (4: 1), Alfred Ankamah, Ghana (5: 0), Maselino Masoe , Samoa (5: 0), and Joni Nyman , Finland (5: 0) , the semifinals which he lost to Laurent Boudouani (4: 1), which he was able to beat at the World Championships.

professional

In 1988 Gould made his professional welterweight debut and was able to win his first 16 fights before surprisingly losing to the rather unknown Anthony Bryant, USA (TKO 3rd) in 1990 . In the rematch he beat this on points. Four more wins later he lost on points in 1991 to the undefeated Roger Turner, USA. In 1992 he won by TKO in the tenth round against Aaron Shockley, USA, the rather insignificant world title of the IBO . After that, things seemed to be improving for Gould. 1993 beat the highly ranked Jimmy Paul and David Gonzalez, making an important step towards a world championship bout. In his 28th and last fight, however, he had injured his shoulder so badly that he had to end his career.
