Candelario Duvergel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Candelario Duvergel Hodelín (* 1963 in Niceto Pérez ; † June 17, 2016 in Havana ) was a Cuban boxer . He was vice- world champion of the amateurs 1986 in Reno welterweight.

Career

Candelario Duvergel was discovered in his childhood by Cuban talent scouts for boxing and systematically introduced to this sport. In accordance with the system of that time in Cuba , he was delegated to the boxing performance center in Guantánamo , where almost 90 percent of top Cuban boxers trained at that time. He got along well in the strict boarding school in Guantánamo and, under the care of head coach Zagarra, developed into one of the best amateur boxers in Cuba and the world at a young age. He was extremely fast, technically gifted and an extraordinary talent for movement, only sometimes suffered a little from the lack of hardness.

His first sensational fight gave Candelario Duvergel as part of a struggle Countries United States against Cuba in 1982 in Reno reigning world champion in the welterweight Mark Breland . He lost this fight just on points, but already showed his great disposition and made victory very difficult for Breland.

1983 Candelario Duvergel was the first Cuban welterweight champion. He then won this title nine times in a row by 1991, seven times in the world championship and twice in the light welterweight division . If you know of the strength and the extraordinary breadth of the Cuban boxers in those years, you cannot appreciate these successes highly enough.

From 1983 onwards there were also successes in the international arena. This year he was in Caracas with a demolition victory in the first round over Genaro León from Mexico for the first time Pan American light welterweight champion. He also won the North American championship and the World Cup light welterweight tournament in Rome that year. In Rome he defeated William Waliwango from Uganda , Vasily Schischow from the USSR and Imre Bacskai from Hungary .

In 1984 he started at the Chemistry Cup in Halle (Saale) and suffered a point defeat against Torsten Schmitz , GDR , in the welterweight final . In the same year he started at the Intercup in Karlsruhe and defeated Alexander Künzler , Germany , clearly on points in the final . He was unable to take part in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles because the socialist states, including Cuba, boycotted these games. In contrast to all other socialist states of the time, Cuba then boycotted the 1985 World Cup in Seoul and the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul at the behest of Fidel Castro . Candelario Duvergel was therefore deprived of the opportunity to participate in the Olympic Games in 1984 and 1988 for political reasons by the communist rulers in Cuba. In a "replacement tournament" organized by the communist states for the Olympic Games, which took place in Havana in 1984 , he won over W. Sandford, Guayana , Imre Bacskai and others. Vyacheslav Janowski from the USSR and won this tournament.

He continued his career and won 1985 a. a. Tournaments in Ústí nad Labem , Ulaanbaatar , Havana and Maturín / Venezuela . With Juan Carlos Lemus , Cuba, and Alejandro Ugueto from Venezuela, he defeated very strong boxers.

In 1986 he took revenge on Torsten Schmitz for the defeat of 1984 at the Chemistry Cup in Halle. He won this tournament by defeating Schmitz. In 1986 he also took part in the World Championships in Reno / USA. There he won victories over V. Onsoy, Turkey , R. Khemais, Tunisia , D. Denny, Ireland and Torsten Schmitz, whom he narrowly defeated 3-2 in the semifinals. In the final battle, Candelario Duvergel was defeated by the American Kenneth Gould just as narrowly with 2: 3 judges' votes and thus became vice world champion .

In 1987 Candelario Duvergel won the Pan American Games for the second time in Indianapolis . In the light welterweight division he needed five fights and in the final he beat Todd Foster from the USA with 4-1 judges' votes. At the World Cup of the same year in Belgrade , he was disqualified in the fight against local Mirko Puzović in the 1st round and took 3rd place in the final score.

In 1988 Candelario Duvergel found his champion in the new boxing star from the GDR Siegfried Mehnert at the TSC tournament in Berlin (East) . Mehnert defeated him in the welterweight division with 4: 1 judges' votes. In 1989 Candelario Duvergel took part again in the World Cup, which took place in Moscow . In the light welterweight division, however, he was already defeated in the quarterfinals against Igor Ruschnikow from the USSR and took 5th place with three other boxers.

In 1990 he won the World Cup in Havana with a victory in the semifinals over Egidio Piseddu from the FRG and a victory in the final over his compatriot Liben Blanco. 1991 Candelario Duvergel reached at the Pan American Games in Havana after a defeat against Aníbal Santiago Acevedo from Puerto Rico in the light welterweight only the 5th place. At his last major international championship in which he took part, the 1991 World Cup in Sydney , he managed to win a medal again. After losing in the semifinals against Vernon Forrest from the USA, he won another bronze medal in the light welterweight division .

For participation in the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona , Candelario Duvergel could no longer qualify. He then stepped back. Duvergel died of a heart attack in Havana on June 17, 2016. He worked as a trainer until shortly before his death.
