Torsten Schmitz

Torsten Schmitz (born August 26, 1964 in Crivitz ) is a German boxing trainer and former amateur boxer.

Amateur career

Torsten Schmitz started boxing at BSG Traktor Wendorf in 1973 after having devoted himself to athletics. As an amateur, Schmitz completed 250 fights with 215 wins. In 1982 he became Junior European Champion in Schwerin . At the 1986 World Championships in Reno and 1991 in Sydney , he finished third, and in 1989 in Moscow he was second. At European Championships he was less successful, mostly other athletes were nominated in his weight class. 1985 in Budapest he was eliminated in the second round of the tournament, in his second participation in the European Championship in 1991 in Gothenburg he reached second place.

In 1988 Schmitz took part in the Olympic Games in Seoul for the GDR , but was eliminated there in the round of 16 against the South Korean Park Si-hun . He was another victim of the numerous misjudgments that favored home boxers. Park eventually won the very controversial gold medal in the final battle against Roy Jones Jr. A participation in the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona was denied Schmitz, because Markus Beyer was nominated in his weight class .

Schmitz was East German champion three times in a row in the welterweight division from 1983 to 1985, as well as in 1987 and 1989 in the light middleweight division. He also won the chemistry cup four times . In 1990 he finished second at the Goodwill Games , where he defeated Chris Byrd and Alexander Lebsjak , but lost the final against Israel Akopkochjan from the Soviet Union . In 1991 he was able to win the German championship title. In the spring of 1993 he ended his career after a serious knee injury.

Coaching career

In 1993 Schmitz finished his studies at the Leipzig DHfK with the qualification of a qualified sports teacher.

From August 1996 he worked as a trainer at Universum Box-Promotion . The boxers he supervised included Bert Schenk , Regina Halmich , Michel Trabant and Luan Krasniqi . With the end of Regina Halmich's career in November 2007, Schmitz lost his job at the Hamburger Universum Boxstall and finally took over the freelance care of SES boxer Robert Stieglitz, with whom he won the WBO super middleweight title against the Universum boxer on August 22, 2009 Károly Balzsay won.

From October 1, 2010 to September 30, 2014 he worked for the boxing stable of the promoter Wilfried Sauerland in Berlin . Then he moved to the Federal Training Center Lower Saxony in Gifhorn . From September 2015 he was a trainer at the Pollex Box Promotion. In the period from January 1, 2017 to September 30, 2017, Schmitz made his services available to the SKC TaBeA Halle association. From October 1, 2017, he worked for the boxing stable AGON Sports & Events in Berlin and remained in office until the end of 2018.
