Károly Balzsay (born July 23, 1979 in Kecskemét , Hungary ) is a former Hungarian boxer and ex-world champion of the WBA and WBO in the super middleweight division.

Amateur career

Károly Balzsay completed 260 fights as an amateur, of which he won 231. He was 1999 Hungarian light middleweight champion, as well as 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003 Hungarian middleweight champion. In 1996 he had reached the quarter-finals of the Junior World Championships in Cuba and in 1997 won the welterweight silver medal at the Junior European Championships in England , where he was able to beat Dimitri Sartison , among others .

At the 1998 European Championships in Belarus he was defeated in the preliminary round against Adrian Diaconu , at the 1999 World Championships in the USA in the round of 16 against Frédéric Esther , and at the 2000 European Championships in Finland also in the preliminary round against Felix Sturm . At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Pornchai Thongburan .

In 2002 he won the silver medal in the middleweight division at the European Championships in Russia , after losing to Oleg Mashkin in the final . He had previously defeated Lucian Bute and Mamadou Diambang, among others . At the 2003 World Championships in Thailand , however, he was eliminated in the preliminary fight against Cavid Tağıyev.

After he had defeated Piotr Wilczewski at the 2004 European Championships in Croatia and was defeated by Tomáš Adámek in the round of 16, he won the European Olympic qualification in Sweden that same year . He defeated Darren Barker , Dmitri Usagin and Sedat Üstüner , among others . He then started at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and defeated Mohamed Sahraoui before losing to Yordanis Despaigne in the round of 16 .

In international tournaments and international matches, he won victories against Alfredo Angulo , Kenneth Egan , Eduard Gutknecht , Nikola Sjekloća , Imre Szellő and Cavid Tağıyev , among others .

Professional career

Károly Balzsay changed in 2004 turned professional and was designed by German boxing stable Universum Box-Promotion of Klaus-Peter Kohl contracted. He was trained by Fritz Sdunek and Artur Grigoryan . After 16 consecutive victories he won on November 24, 2007 in Dresden against the Argentinian Ruben Acosta of the Jurgen Brahmer laid down Title WBO Intercontinental , which he then successfully defended against Mantas Tarvydas and Jose Clavero.

On January 10, 2009, he defeated the undefeated Russian Denis Inkin in Magdeburg unanimously on points and thereby became WBO world champion in the super middleweight division. On April 25, 2009 he was able to defend the title in Krefeld by knockout in the eleventh round against Maselino Masoe . In his second title defense on August 22, 2009 in Budapest, he lost to Robert Stieglitz by breaking off the referee (RTD) . In his next fight against Eduard Gutknecht on December 4, 2009, he also lost just on points.

On August 26, 2011, he defeated the undefeated Russian Stanislaw Kaschtanow in Donetsk on points and thus still won the vacant WBA world title in super middleweight. He defended this on April 21, 2012 in Schwerin with a technical knockout (TKO) in the twelfth round against Dimitri Sartison . This was also his last boxing match.

On February 2, 2013, he announced his resignation.
