Robert Stieglitz (born June 20, 1981 in Yeisk , Soviet Union , today Russia , as Sergei Stieglitz ) is a former German boxer. He was WBO super middleweight champion from 2009 to 2012 and from 2013 to 2014 .

Professional career

IBF career

After the separation of his parents who moved Russia German Stieglitz to his uncle in Magdeburg in order for the German team champion 1. BC Magdeburg to box. Stieglitz is since February 2001 at SES -Boxstall under contract. He made his professional debut in April 2001. In October 2002 he won the vacant junior title of the IBF in the light heavyweight division. After defending his title three times, he switched to the super middleweight division in 2004 and won the junior title here as well, and in April 2005 the IBF “Intercontinental” title. Stieglitz was on the ground for the first time in his professional career against Djamel Selini; but he won this fight unanimously on points.

Due to the smaller and insignificant title wins in the IBF Association, he was able to work his way up in the IBF world rankings despite the lack of victories against well-known opponents and was won on December 3, 2005 by an early victory over the hard-hitting, but unknown Colombian Alejandro Berrio , the also had only three weeks of preparation for this encounter, in an elimination match mandatory challenger of WBO and IBF title holder Joe Calzaghe . His other opponents were never at the front in independent rankings,

After Calzaghe refused to complete his mandatory defense against Stieglitz in order to claim more lucrative fights in the US, the IBF title became vacant. Sauerland Event auctioned the rights to host the fight for $ 614,444 in January 2007, compared to a bid of $ 612,806 through Universum Box Promotion and SES - a difference of only $ 1,638 . Stieglitz then boxed on March 3, 2007 in Rostock at a Sauerland event for the belt of the IBF world association in the super middleweight division again against his old rival Alejandro Berrio and lost after two knock-downs in the third round by technical knockout

After the defeat against Berrio, Stieglitz's long-time coach Werner Kirsch was dismissed by SES and his new coach was Torsten Schmitz . This was followed by two victories in development matches before Stieglitz was nominated for an elimination match against the Mexican Librado Andrade for a world championship match of the IBF Association. This meeting took place on March 22nd, 2008 in the USA ; Stieglitz lost to a technical knockout in the eighth round. In December 2008 he managed to win a point against the previously undefeated Lukas Wilaschek .

WBO career

After two more victories, Stieglitz received his second World Cup chance on August 22, 2009; he competed in Budapest against the Hungarian WBO world champion Károly Balzsay and won the title by technical knockout in the eleventh round, since the exhausted Balzsay no longer appeared in the twelfth round. After Max Schmeling , Ralf Rocchigiani and Markus Beyer, Stieglitz was only the fourth German to become world champion abroad. Stieglitz defended the WBO title for the first time on January 9, 2010 in Magdeburg against Ruben Acosta. The Argentine stood in at short notice for the Colombian Edison Miranda , who had canceled two weeks before the fight due to a flu illness. Stieglitz won by technical knockout in the fifth round.

Stieglitz completed his first compulsory defense of the WBO title on April 17, 2010 against the hitherto undefeated Eduard Gutknecht by winning the points. On November 20, there was then a fight against Enrique Ornelas, which he also won on points. His next opponent should be the reigning “regular” WBA title holder Dimitri Sartison on April 9, 2011 . However, since Sartison was seriously injured in training 1.5 weeks before the match and had to cancel, the Armenian Khoren Gevor was hired as a substitute opponent at short notice . After Gevor was noticed by improper actions during the fight and had already been warned, both boxers went to the ground in the tenth round after a headbutt during the subsequent clamps. Stieglitz pulled a laceration over his right eye. Gevor was then disqualified by referee Manfred Küchler, whereupon Gevor caused a scandal, attacked Küchler and had to be led out of the hall by officials and supervisors.

Stieglitz was supposed to box against former WBA and WBC world champion Mikkel Kessler on November 5, 2011 in the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen . The fight was initially postponed to April 14, 2012 due to a hand injury by Kessler. Instead, Stieglitz successfully defended his title on January 15, 2012 against the previously undefeated Henry Weber. On March 12, 2012, the second date for the Kesslerkampf was canceled. A fight against the British George Groves was also canceled. On May 5, 2012, he defended his title on points against the Australian Nader Hamdan.

On August 25, 2012, he lost to Arthur Abraham on points in Berlin and thus lost his WBO world champion belt after three years. He won the previously contractually agreed rematch on March 23, 2013 in Magdeburg by breaking off after three rounds due to a swollen eye of Abraham and thus became WBO world champion again. Stieglitz had won all three rounds before.

On July 13, 2013 Stieglitz successfully defended his WBO title in the EnergieVerbund Arena in Dresden against the Japanese Yūzō Kiyota through TKO in the 10th round. The fight had been stopped because of a cut over Kiyota's left eye. Since it was suspected that an accidental headbutt was responsible for the injury, the ballots on which Stieglitz had a clear lead were counted. Later, however, the judgment was converted into a technical knockout victory. For the 29-year-old Japanese it was the 28th professional fight, the first on European soil and his fourth defeat.

On March 2, 2014, Robert Stieglitz lost in the third fight against Arthur Abraham by majority decision (1: 2). On November 8, 2014, he boxed in the Stuttgart Porsche Arena with an agreed catchweight of 75.5 kilograms (between middle and super middleweight) against Felix Sturm and reached a draw. On July 18, 2015, he lost again to Abraham, this time prematurely in the sixth round.

EBU career

On November 12, 2016, Stieglitz won the EBU light heavyweight title in the GETEC Arena in Magdeburg against the Frenchman Mehdi Amar unanimously on points. A little later, on March 18, 2017, he was able to defend his European championship title against the Montenegrin Nikola Sjekloća in the Arena Leipzig , but this time only by a draw after a majority decision (2: 1).

End of career

After his two European Championship fights, Stieglitz was asked several times whether he would continue his career. He then asked for time and patience to be able to make a decision in peace. At the instruction of the EBU, a duel between Stieglitz and his SES colleague and the EBU's mandatory challenger, Dominic Bösel , was announced. On May 23, 2017, Stieglitz announced that he would end his career with immediate effect. The reason he cited was that his body was no longer doing the way he wanted it to. Although he feels physically fit, he has a few "construction sites" such as B. his hand, which had to be operated on several times, and a shoulder injury that has not yet fully healed, which led him to decide to end his career. He did not rule out a career as a coach.

Private

Between his fights as a boxer, Stieglitz earned his diploma as a physical education teacher at Yeisk University through a three-year distance learning course. He lives in Magdeburg. He has a son with his divorced wife and a daughter with his current partner.

Others

In March 2018, Robert Stieglitz founded the Stieglitz Boxing Akademie e. Together with Andrej Sviridov and Bastian Kirchner in Hohenwarsleben . V. founded. The focus is on getting children and young people into boxing and participating in Olympic boxing championships with them over the next few years. There were first successes at the state championships of Saxony-Anhalt in 2018, when two titles for men and five for students went to the Stieglitz Boxing Academy.
