Alejandro Berrio (* 7. August 1976 in Cartagena (Colombia) as Alejandro Berrio Hernández ) is a Colombian boxer.

Professional career

In 1997 Berrio turned pro in his home country and won most of his fights by knockout. He suffered premature defeats in 1998 against his unknown compatriot Jairo Jesús Siris, in 2001 against the then completely unknown Henry Porras (who later lost against all well-known opponents such as Jürgen Brähmer , Danilo Häussler , Mikkel Kessler or Carl Froch) and in 2003 against the unknown American Eric Mitchell.

In 2005 he achieved his first international success with a knockout against the multiple Canadian World Cup challenger Syd Vanderpool. In the next fight he lost in Germany against Robert Stieglitz in an elimination match of the IBF Association without proper preparation a fourth time prematurely.

A win against the undefeated US-American Yusaf Mack then brought him up in the rankings. In March 2007 he won the vacant IBF title in a rematch against Stieglitz in Rostock through a technical knockout in round three. In the IWBR computer ranking, he was at position 17, Stieglitz at 15. Before the fight, Berrio had been signed for his boxing stable by Wilfried Sauerland , who had also won the fight very close.

On October 19, 2007 he played his first title defense against the unbeaten mandatory challenger Lucian Bute and lost the belt to the Romanian by technical knockout in the eleventh round.
