Super middleweight

The super middleweight is a weight class in the martial arts boxing and kickboxing .

In professional boxing , the super middleweight in 1974 from was US association Ohio Boxing Commission introduced. The IBF Association , which was founded in 1983 as the United States Boxing Association (USBA), was the first major world association to recognize this weight class, which is why the IBF also had the first world champion with the Briton Murray Sutherland (Sutherland won the title on March 28, 1984 in Atlantic City , New Jersey , with a unanimous victory over the American Ernie Singletary ).

In 1987 the weight class was also enforced by the WBA , which was founded in 1921 as the National Boxing Association (NBA). The WBC did not recognize the super middleweight until the following year. First WBA world champion was on December 6, 1987 Park Chong-pal and first WBC world champion on November 7, 1988 Sugar Ray Leonard . Thomas Hearns became the first WBO world champion on November 4, 1988 . The WBO was not a major organization at the time.

The super middleweight is only available from the professionals. The lower weight limit is 72.575 kg (160 pounds) and the upper 76.203 kg (168 pounds ). It's between the light heavyweight and middleweight classes.

As the best super middleweight of all time, the Hall of Famer and undefeated Briton Joe Calzaghe (match record: 46 fights, 46 wins, 32 knockout victories ) is listed.
