Eduard Gutknecht (born March 19, 1982 in Schetissai , Kazakh SSR , Soviet Union , today Kazakhstan ) is a former German boxer and former EBU European light heavyweight champion.

amateur

Gutknecht started boxing at the age of thirteen. As an amateur, he played 157 fights, of which he won 124. In 2000 he was vice-junior world champion in the light middleweight division in Budapest , where he lost the final just after auxiliary points (17: +17) against the Russian Denis Tschernysch. At the European Championships in Perm in 2002 , however, he was eliminated in the first round against Piotr Wilczewski .

In 2005 he took part in the amateur world championships in Mianyang , China , but lost in the round of 16 just on points (30:31) against Mamadou Diambang. At the military world championship of the same year in Pretoria , he finished third, but failed in the semi-finals against South Korean Kim Jae-ki (23:35). Also in 2005 he won the chemistry cup , including a lucky win against Gennady Golovkin .

Gutknecht was also two-time German middleweight champion: 2003 with a final victory over Lukas Wilaschek and 2005, with a final victory against Jörg Rosomkiewicz. In 2002 he failed in the semi-finals in the light middleweight class to Sebastian Zbik .

Professional career

In March 2006 Eduard Gutknecht switched to the professionals and signed Spotlight Boxing with the Hamburg boxing stable . He had his first professional appearance on May 27, 2006 in Munich as part of Jürgen Brähmer's fight against Mario Veit and won on points. In the first three years of his professional career, he boxed exclusively against opponents who were developing. In August 2008 Gutknecht only just won on points against Philippe Mendy (at this point 5-9-2) and had to go down after a hit. On November 22, 2008, he won the German super middleweight championship with a ten round victory over Christian Pawlak.

In his 18th professional fight in Sölden , Austria, Gutknecht surprisingly defeated the former Hungarian WBO title holder Károly Balzsay with 2: 1 judges' votes just on points. After this success he became a compulsory challenger for the World Championship title of the WBO association in the super middleweight division and received a World Cup chance against Robert Stieglitz on April 17, 2010 . However , he lost the fight in the Magdeburg Bördelandhalle over twelve rounds clearly on points.

In January 2011 Gutknecht moved to the Berlin Boxstall Sauerland Event , his new coach was Ulli Wegner . He also changed the weight class and rose to the light heavyweight division. In May 2011 Gutknecht was European champion by technical knockout against Danny McIntosh . He defended this title for the first time on July 16, 2011 in Munich by unanimously winning points against the Italian Lorenzo Di Giacomo. On February 4, 2012 he defended the title against the Ukrainian Vyacheslav Uselkow (25-1) on points. On March 31, he got back into the ring and defended his controversial title by split decision against the French Tony Averlant.

On February 2, 2013, he lost the EBU title by a unanimous defeat on points to Jürgen Brähmer . On June 8, 2013, he won the WBA Intercontinental Championship by winning points against Richard Vidal. On November 23, 2013, he had to admit defeat to the Russian Dmitri Sukhotsky in Bamberg . Gutknecht already suffered a significant swelling in his left eye in the first rounds, which caused the referee to break off the fight after consulting the ring doctor at the end of the fourth round. Suchotski was declared the winner by technical knockout according to the applicable rules. In his next fight on May 3, 2014 Gutknecht didn’t get past a draw over eight rounds against Argentine opponent Pablo Sosa (3-3).

In November 2016, he lost unanimously on points to the British George Groves (24-3). During the fight, his brain swelled and he had to undergo emergency surgery. He was then in a coma for several weeks and has been dependent on permanent care ever since.
