Imre Szellő (* 27. July 1983 in Cegléd ) is a Hungarian professional boxer in the cruiserweight division .
Amateur successes
The approximately 1.85 m tall left-wing boom played more than 300 fights as an amateur. He won a bronze welterweight medal in 1999 at the European Cadet Championships in Baku , a bronze middleweight medal at the European Junior Championships in Sarajevo in 2001, and the middleweight silver medal at the 2001 Junior World Championships in Budapest .
In the adult category, he was Hungarian Middleweight Champion in 2004, Hungarian Light Heavyweight Champion in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010, and Hungarian Heavyweight Champion in 2013. At the 2007 World Championships in Chicago , he was only eliminated in the quarterfinals against the later silver medalist Artur Beterbijew and thus qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing . There he reached the quarterfinals with a win against Luis González before losing to Tony Jeffries in the fight for a place in the medal ranks .
At the 2011 European Championships in Ankara , he won a bronze medal in the light heavyweight division, after only being eliminated in the semi-finals against Joe Ward .
He was also a bronze medalist at the 2008 EU Championships in Władysławowo and a gold medalist at the 2009 EU Championships in Odense . He defeated among others Marijo Šivolija , Kenneth Egan and Obed Mbwakongo .
In the 2010/11 season he boxed for Team Memphis Force , and from 2011 to 2014 for Team Italia Thunder in the World Series of Boxing and won 11 of 13 fights. He defeated, among others, Denys Pojazyka , Džemal Bošnjak , Kennedy Katende , Denys Solonenko and Johann Witt .
Professional career
He won his professional debut on June 6, 2014. In his second fight on September 20 of the same year, he won the Hungarian cruiserweight championship. He remained undefeated in 22 other fights, becoming WBO Intercontinental Cruiserweight Champion. He defeated the Brazilian Hamilton Ventura, as well as his compatriot Tamás Tóth and the undefeated American Robert Hall in defending his titles. In October 2018 he defeated Gusmyr Perdomo, Mikkel Kessler's 2009 WBA World Championship challenger .
On October 19, 2019, he boxed for the Imterims World Cup of the WBA in the cruiserweight division, but lost by knockout in the seventh round against the Belgian Ryad Merhy .
