Ryad Merhy (born November 28, 1992 in Abidjan , Ivory Coast ) is a Belgian cruiserweight boxer of Ivorian origin .
Origin and amateur career
Ryad Merhy is the son of a Lebanese and an Ivorian. He was born in Abidjan, the capital of the West African state of Ivory Coast, came to Belgium at the age of three and started boxing at the age of 14. In 2010 he became Belgian light heavyweight champion . His amateur record was twelve wins, four losses and one draw.
Professional career
Merhy signed a five-year contract with Alain Vanackère's 12 Rounds Promotion and made his debut on June 29, 2013. He won 24 fights in a row, 20 of them early, and won the WBC International Silver and WBA Intercontinental titles .
On March 24, 2018, he lost in France in the fight for the interim world championship of the WBA by TKO in the eleventh round against Arsen Goulamirian . In December 2018 he beat the American Samuel Clarkson by knockout in the fourth round and became WBA International Champion .
On October 19, 2019, he defeated Imre Szellő, who was also unbeaten, and became the interim world champion of the WBA.
