Obed Mbwakongo
Obed Mbwakongo (* 1988 ) is an English boxer .
Career
Obed Mbwakongo started boxing at the age of 10. He became a member of the Lynn AC Boxing Club London . He is trained there by Samm Mullins. While preparing for important competitions, he often trains at the British Boxing Federation's performance center in Sheffield . If he has time he can still earn some money as a taxi driver in London. His brother Christopher, who is six years younger than him, is also a boxer.
As a junior, Obed Mbwakongo was very successful. It started back in 2005 when he took 3rd place at the Junior World Championships (Cadets) in the weight class up to 80 kg, losing on points (20:29) in the semifinals against Cuban Noel Hernandez. In 2006 he was also third at the European Junior Championships in Rome in the light heavyweight division and took the same place at the 2006 Junior World Championships in Agadir . At the Junior Championship of the European Union in 2007 in Warsaw he reached the light heavyweight final, in which he lost on points against Melihsah Sarica from Turkey (12:18). At the European Junior Championships 2007 in Sombor / Serbia , however, he was eliminated in the round of 16 by a point defeat against Melihsah Sarica and only came in 9th place.
In 2007 Obed Mbwakongo was already used at the 5th Commonwealth Championships in Liverpool for the seniors and came there in the light heavyweight division after a victory over Glenn Hunter from Australia and a defeat against Goodwin Amos Mwakapala from Tanzania on the 3rd place.
At the European Championships in Liverpool in 2008 he defeated Eemeli Katajisto from Finland in the light heavyweight division on points (7: 3), but lost in the quarter-finals against Sergej Kornejew from Belarus and thus narrowly missed the medal ranks with 5th place. At the Championships of the European Union in Odense / Denmark he reached the final with victories over Krzysztof Sadlori from Poland and Hrvoje Sep from Croatia , in which he suffered a bitter knockout defeat against Imre Szellő from Hungary in the second round.
Obed Mbwakongo had no luck at the next international championships either, as he always lost in the quarter-finals and narrowly missed the medals. First he felt at the 6th Commonwealth Championships 2010 in New Delhi, where he lost to Leonard Odilo Machichi from Tanzania on points (1: 4), then he was eliminated at the European Championships 2010 in Moscow after victories over Kennedy Katende , Sweden and Onder Ezgül, Turkey against Abdelkader Bouhenia from France and finally he lost at the 19th Commonwealth Games in 2010 in New Delhi after defeating the Indian world class boxer Dinesh Kumar by losing points to Callum Johnson from Scotland . He finished 5th in all three competitions.
At the 2011 European Championships in Ankara , he lost again in the round of 16 against Imre Szello and only came in 9th place.
Despite these defeats, which he suffered mainly in 2010 and 2011, Obed Mbwakongo is considered Great Britain's great hope for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London in the light heavyweight division.
