European boxing championships
The European Boxing Championships are the most important European boxing competitions alongside the European Games , which were held in the Azerbaijani capital Baku for the first time in 2015 . They took place at irregular intervals from 1925 to 1947. From 1947 to 1993, they were held every two years. From 1996 to 2010 they took place again every two years. Since 2011, they have been held every two years by the European amateur boxing association EABA . Women's competitions first took place in 2001 in Saint-Amand-les-Eaux, France. They were held annually from 2003 to 2009. The 8th competitions were held in 2011 in Rotterdam . The 9th and so far last competitions took place in 2014 in the Romanian capital Bucharest .
At the first European Championship, which was held in the Swedish capital Stockholm , boxing was carried out in 8 weight classes. Today the competitions are carried out in eleven weight classes.
The 7th European Championships in Breslau in 1942 were the last European Championships until the end of the war. The titles won were canceled by the AIBA , as this European championship was declared a "rump championship" because Germany's opponents of the war were absent.
The Bulgarian Iwajlo Marinow is the most successful participant to date with a total of four gold and one silver medal, regardless of the weight classes, and the Irish Katie Taylor is the most successful participant with a total of 6 gold medals. For the men, the most successful participating nation so far is by far the former Soviet Union , for the women it is Russia (also by a large margin).
