Kathleen "Katie" Taylor (born July 2, 1986 in Bray , County Wicklow ) is an Irish professional boxer , current world champion of all four major associations ( WBA , IBF , WBO , WBC ) in the lightweight , and former WBO world champion light welterweight.

As an amateur, she was Olympic champion in 2012, world champion in 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2014, and European champion in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2014. She achieved all successes in the lightweight (up to 60 kg).

Private

Katie Taylor grew up in the city of her birth in a family that had boxed for several generations. Her father, Peter Taylor, was the Irish amateur boxer champion in 1986 and her brothers are also into the sport.

Amateur career

She started boxing in 1998 at St. Fergal's Boxing Club in Bray. Her first coach was her father, who has looked after her throughout her entire career and is also the coach of the Irish women's national team in boxing. On October 31, 2001, Katie Taylor made for a sporting historical date, because on that day she played the first women's boxing match ever to take place on the Irish island against Alanna Audley at the National Stadium in Dublin and won this fight on points.

Professional career

She defended the title in December of the same year against the American Jessica McCaskill.

On April 28, 2018, she won a title unification fight against IBF world champion Victoria Bustos. She defended both titles early on July 28, 2018 against the American Kimberly Connor. Her next title defense was on October 20, 2018 against Cindy Serrano from Puerto Rico and won unanimously on points. Their now fifth WBA and third IBF title defense won on December 15, 2018 Madison Square Garden of New York City unanimously against unbeaten Finland's Eva Wahlström who could defeat them already during their amateur careers.

On March 15, 2019, she combined her WBA and IBF titles with the WBO world title of Rose Volante, after she had a TKO win against the Brazilian. She won the WBC world title on June 1, 2019 by winning points against the Belgian Delfine Persoon. After Cecilia Brækhus and Claressa Shields , she was only the third woman to combine all four important world championship belts in one weight class.

On November 2, 2019, she boxed light welterweight against the Greek Christina Linardatou for the WBO world title and won unanimously on points.

On August 22, 2020, she contested a rematch against Delfine Persoon for the four lightweight world titles and won unanimously.

Career as a footballer

In addition to boxing, Katie Taylor also indulges in football. She plays for Lourdes Celtic, St. James Gate, St Catherine's and Peamount United in the highest Irish women's league. She also played on the U-16 and U-19 national teams of Ireland and was a member of the Irish women's national team from 2006 to 2009. But she has always made it clear that boxing is her No. 1 sport.
