Gülsüm Şeyma Tatar (* 6. February 1985 in Kars , Turkey ) is a Turkish professional boxer in the Light Welterweight . As an amateur, she was twice world champion and three times European champion.

Amateur career

Tatar became a member of the Fenerbahçe Istanbul Sports Club in 2003 , to which she was a member until 2010. She then moved to Birlikspor Kulübü Kayseri .

She initially boxed in the -60 kg weight class and won the gold medal at the European Championships in Italy in 2004 after defeating the German Carmen Falke, the Polish Anna Kasprzak and the Finnish Eva Wahlström in the final. It was the only Turkish gold medal at this European Championship and the fifth so far at the European Women's Championships.

In 2005 she was able to move into the semifinals at the European Championships in Norway by beating the Hungarian Beáta Szabó, where she was eliminated with a bronze medal against the Irish Katie Taylor with 12: 12+. She also took part in the 2005 World Championships in Russia , where she reached the finals by winning against Hanan Abdelmonem from Egypt, Ashley Barnett from the USA and Mitchelle Martinez from the Philippines, where she was defeated by Russian Tatyana Tschalaja.

In 2006 she won the first EU championship in Italy, this time also beating Katie Taylor. She had further victories against the Swiss Sandra Brügger and again against Anna Kasprzak. At the 2006 European Championships held in Poland , she reached the semifinals against the Czech Danuse Dylhofova and the Ukrainian Jana Sawjalowa, where she was eliminated again against Katie Taylor with a bronze medal.

In 2007 Tatar won the EU championship in France again , defeating Kinga Siwa from Poland and Evelyn Coolens from Belgium. At the European Championships in Denmark in 2007 , however, she was eliminated against Jana Sawjalowa in the round of 16. Then she switched to the -63 or -64 kg weight class.

In 2008 she won the EU championship in England with victories against the German Janina Bonordon, Kinga Siwa and the English Natasha Jonas and also competed at the 2008 World Cup in China . There she defeated Saida Tschasenowa from Kazakhstan, Ri Hyon-hwa from North Korea, Ma Jianxia from China and in the final Ljubow Lopatina from Russia, making her only the third Turkish boxing world champion after Hülya Şahin (2001) and Hasibe Erkoç (2006). In addition, her teammate Şemsi Yaralı also won gold in the -86 kg class.

In 2009 she also won gold at the European Championships in Ukraine after victories against Gry Espersen from Denmark, Natasha Jonas, the Russian Vera Slugina and the French Farida El Hadrati. She became only the third Turkish double European champion after Hülya Şahin (2001/2003) and Sümeyra Kaya (2006/2007).

In 2010 she won the EU championship in Hungary against Alanna Murphy from Ireland, Hristina Athanasopoulou from Greece and Chantelle Cameron from England. She was also a fixed starter at the 2010 World Cup in Barbados , where she won her second World Cup gold medal. After victories against Alanna Murphy, Saida Tschasenowa from Kazakhstan and Klara Svensson from Sweden, she again defeated Vera Slugina in the final fight. She was the only Turkish medalist to leave this World Cup and at the same time became the first Turkish double world champion in sporting history.

She achieved her last major success at the 2011 European Championships in the Netherlands , when she fought her way to the final against the Romanian Iulia Novacioiu, Hristina Athanasopoulou, the French Laetitia Chevalier and Natasha Jonas, where she defeated the Armenian Armine Sinabian. She also became the first Turkish female boxer to win three European Championship gold medals.

At the 2012 World Cup in China, Tatar surprisingly lost in the preliminary round to Sarita Laishram from India and thus missed the qualification to take part in the 2012 Olympic Games , where women's boxing was held for the first time. At the 2014 European Championships in Romania , she was also eliminated in the preliminary round against Kinga Siwa with 1: 2. Also at the 2014 World Cup in South Korea , she failed in the second fight against the Englishwoman Sandy Ryan , after she had previously defeated the Spanish Miriam Gutierrez.

In 2016 she took part in the European Championship in Bulgaria , where she defeated Shahla Allachwerdiewa from Azerbaijan in the round of 16, but was eliminated again by Kinga Siwa in the quarter-finals. In the European Olympic qualification in 2016 in Turkey, she lost in the first fight against Jana Alexejewna from Azerbaijan.
