Julia Sahin (* February 23, 1974 in Siegen , Germany as Hülya Şahin ) is a German boxing athlete of Turkish descent and lives in Cologne .

She only began her professional career when she was almost 30 years old. Julia Sahin was victorious as a professional for 20 fights in a row, including two times with knockout , and most recently undefeated world champion of the Women's International Boxing Federation (WIBF) in junior flyweight .

At the age of 35 she suffered her first defeat as a professional on October 10, 2009 in Rostock, but in the higher weight class of flyweight and after a year and a half of unintentional break from fighting.

Since January 26, 2011, she has also been the coach of the second women's team of the SV Fühlingen Chorweiler soccer club.

Career to become a world champion

Julia Sahin was a very successful amateur boxer for seven years before her relatively late professional career. Under her maiden name Hülya Şahin - as a child of Turkish parents - she achieved four Turkish championship titles, was European champion in 2001 and 2003 and also world champion in 2001 (each in the -48 kg weight class). Before that, Sahin had already become world champion in kickboxing in 1995 at the age of 21 .

For her first professional contract with the Hamburg boxing stable Universum , her name was Germanized for marketing reasons. “It's a bit related somewhere,” she said succinctly and many of her friends would have called her that anyway because of the simple pronunciation.

On January 27, 2007, Sahin was in her seventeenth professional fight in Düsseldorf by winning points over the Russian Anastasia Toktaulova world champion of the WIBF in the junior flyweight up to 49 kg. She then successfully defended this title in three fights against challengers, first in Stuttgart against Hollie Dunaway from the USA , then again in Düsseldorf against Mexican Delia Lopez and most recently on April 5, 2008 again in Düsseldorf against Yahaira Martinez from Puerto Rico .

Unintentionally retired

In the summer of 2008, the fourth defense of the title was already imminent in a few days when her boxing stable dropped her at short notice during negotiations about the fight exchange. According to a press report, it was not telegenic enough and was therefore suddenly unnecessary. Sahin accepted the unwanted retirement without public discussion and later commented that what was turned outward was simply not her way "and if someone says that I am not wanted, then I prefer to go."

In view of the fact that in professional boxing for women, although martial arts, a feminine, possibly model-like charisma similar to that of Regina Halmich is of great importance for the entertainment value, Sahin remarked that she wanted to sell herself “primarily as an athlete and not as a woman” .

Because of these events, the WIBF junior flyweight title later fell to Korean Kim Ju Hee, without her having defeated reigning world champion Julia Sahin. Meanwhile, Sahin continued to work as a trained metalworker at the transport company in her place of residence in Cologne ( KVB ) in three shifts. She had not given up the position there during her professional career. Rather, she supported her employer with increasing success and increasing demands in their struggles through special leave.

Flyweight comeback

More than a year later, Universum's sister company Spotlight Boxing surprisingly signed Julia Sahin to defend its WIBF World Champion Susi Kentikian in the flyweight class up to 50.8 kg. In addition, it was registered in the press that it had become difficult to find suitable opponents for Kentikian. In this respect, it is to be seen as recognition of Sahin's great class that this world championship fight in the higher weight class - which was ultimately lost unanimously on points - came about on October 10, 2009.

Before the fight took place, Sahin said that she would definitely like to continue her career in the ring, but in her own way: "I will only continue to do what suits me."

Her (as of January 2013) last two fights on October 30, 2010 in bantamweight against Hagar Shmoulefeld Finer and on June 18, 2011 in super flyweight against Nadia Hokmi, she also lost unanimously on points.
