Sandy Ryan (* 1993 in Derby ) is an English boxer . In 2014 she was runner-up in the amateur world championship in the weight class up to 64 kg.

Career

Sandy Ryan played soccer as a teenager and also started boxing. She soon decided to go into boxing and became a member of the One Nation Pegasus ABC Derby sports club . Her coach has been John Wadsworth ever since. She developed rapidly and won the English championship title for women in lightweight (up to 60 kg body weight) for the first time in 2010 at the age of 17. She also won this title in 2012 and 2013.

Her international career began in 2010 when she competed in the lightweight at the European Youth Championships in Sangatte / France. She reached the final with points wins over Kata Pibojszki, Hungary (5: 3), and Mariann Vennevold, Denmark (4: 2), in which she lost on points to Anastassija Beljakowa , Russia (1:10).

After that, she was built up very carefully and was accepted into the UK boxing program of the English Amateur Boxing Association (ABAE) in 2013, and has been able to concentrate fully on her sport ever since. Since then, her training has mainly taken place at the ABAE's performance center in Sheffield.

In January 2013 she represented England at the Nations Cup in Zrenjanin in the lightweight, but lost to Natalija Schadrina from Russia on points (1: 3). In October 2013 she started at the 34th Tammer Tournament in Tampere, where she won the tournament with a technical knockout victory in the third round over Lee Wei-hsien, Taiwan and a point win over Charlene Jones from Wales.

In July 2014 she took part in the 4th China Open in Guiyang / China in lightweight. She won there first over Chen Chia-Ling, Taiwan with technical knockout in the 4th round, but then lost in the semifinals against Yin Junhua from China on points (0: 3 RS). In October 2014 she started at the 3rd Queens Cup in Stralsund for the first time in the light welterweight division, where she won the tournament with a point win over Anais Kistler, Switzerland (3-0) and a technical knockout win in the 3rd round over Fam Elgan from Norway . In November 2014 she was used by the ABAE at the world championship in Jeju, South Korea, in light welterweight. She was in excellent form there and defeated Bianka Nagy from Hungary (3-0), the two-time world champion (2008 and 2010) Gülsüm Tatar from Turkey (3-0), Simone Sitar from Romania (3-0) and Supaporn Srisondee, Thailand (3-0) clearly on points. So she met in the final again on Anastassija Beljakowa, whom she had faced in 2010 in the final of the European Youth Championship. As then, she lost in this final against Anastassija Belyakova on points (0: 3) and became vice world champion.

Her stated goal is to take part in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro as a lightweight. In England she has very tough competitors in Chantelle Cameron and Natasha Jonas .

Explanations
  • WM = World Championship, EM = European Championship
  • Lightweight, weight class up to 60 kg, half welter weight, up to 64 kg body weight
  • RS = judges' votes (the controversial point machines were abolished by AIBA in 2013; judges have been making judges again since then)
