Claressa Shields (born March 17, 1995 in Flint , Michigan ) is an American boxer . She was Olympic champion in 2012 and 2016 , and world champion in middleweight (up to 75 kg) in 2014 and 2016 .

After she won the most important trophies of the WBC , WBA and IBF in 2018 and the WBO against Christina Hammer in 2019 , she unites the world titles of all major boxing world federations and is thus the undisputed boxing world champion in her weight class.

Career

Claressa Shields began boxing at the age of eleven in Flint, which she was encouraged to do by her father Bo, who was incarcerated in a prison and boxed there for almost all of Claressa's childhood. He gave her Laila Ali , the daughter of Muhammad Ali, as a role model to which she should stick . She learned boxing at Berston Field House in Flint. Your trainer is Jaon Crutchfield.

The physically very strong Claressa Shields caught the attention of the US Boxing Association in 2011 by winning several national boxing tournaments. In February 2012 she was therefore invited to the US Olympic Trials in Spokane . She started there in the weight class up to 75 kg and won there with victories over the top boxers Franchon Crews (31:19), Andrecia Wasson , the 2010 world champion (31:12) and Chatiqua Hemingway , against whom she had to box twice and which she did twice defeated (23:15 and 23:18), 1st place.

She was then sent to the 2012 Pan American Championship in Cornwall (Ontario) . There she defeated Roselli Feitosa , Brazil (29:11) and the multiple world champion Mary Spencer from Canada (27:14) clearly on points and won this title. In May 2012 she competed in the World Championships in Qinhuangdao , China. She won there in the middleweight division over Pooja Rani from India (27:10) clearly on points, but then suffered her first defeat as a boxer in the fight against Savannah Marshall from England . She lost with 8:14 hits. She was eliminated and only came in 17th place.

At the age of just 17, she then entered the Olympic Games in London . There she defeated the experienced and successful boxers Anna Laurell from Sweden (18:14), Marina Wolnowa , Kazakhstan and Nadezhda Torlopova from Russia and became a sensational Olympic champion . The final fight was only her 27th fight and her 26th victory.

In February 2013 Claressa Shields won in Lansing (Michigan) in a revenge of the Pan American Championship of 2012 over Mary Spencer on points (4-1 judges' votes). Claressa was unable to participate in the 2013 USA Championship in Spokane due to a rule change by the International Amateur Boxing Association AIBA because she was too young for it now. She had to compete in the youth class and became USA champion there without a fight because there was no opponent who wanted to compete against the Olympic champion. She was also unable to take part in the 2013 Pan American Championships because of her young age.

In January 2014 Claressa Shields was the first US champion of the elite middleweight division. She defeated Raquel Miller and Franchon Crews each on points (3-0 RS). After victories at two well-attended international tournaments in Mexico City and Kansas City, in September 2014 in Guadalajara / Mexico with points victories over Flavia Figueiredo, Brazil and Ariane Fortin, Canada, she again became the Pan American champion in the weight class up to 75 kg body weight. In November 2014 she became world champion for the first time in the same weight class . On the way to this success she won five fights and defeated the Chinese Li Qian on points in the final (3-0 judges' votes).

Claressa Shields was able to continue her successful streak in 2015 as well. In January 2015, the again American champion of the elite middleweight division. But she had to give everything to defeat Chatiqua Hemingway and Raquel Miller on the way to this success with 2: 1 judges' votes. On April 25, 2015, she defeated the USA against China in an international match in Atlanta with a 3-0 judge's vote, Li Qian, whom she had already defeated in the final of the 2014 World Cup. In July 2015 she won the middleweight division of the Pan American Games in Toronto, defeating the Brazilian Flávia Figueiredo, the Argentine Lucía Pérez and in the final the Dominican Yenebier Guillén with 3-0 judges' votes.

From October 25 to November 1, 2015, she started at the US Olympic Elimination Tournament (Trials) in Memphis. She also won this tournament, defeating Naomi Graham (3-0), Chatiqua Hemingway (3-0), Raquel Miller (3-0) and in the final again Chatiqua Hemingway (3-0) on points.

In March 2016, Claressa Shields qualified in Buenos Aires with a tournament victory for participation in the 9th AIBA Women's World Championship. She defeated Atheyna Bylon, Panama, Yenebier Guillen from the Dominican Republic and Ariane Fortin from Canada in the weight class up to 75 kg, each with 3-0 judge votes. At the World Championships in Astana, which took place in May 2016, she defeated Sarah Scheurich from Germany by technical knockout in the 4th round and landed over Nafisachon Askarowa, Uzbekistan, Violetta Knjazewa, Kazakhstan, Chen Nien-Chien, Taiwan and also in the final over Nouchka Fontijn, Netherlands, each secure 3-0 point victories. At the high point of the year, the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in August 2016, Claressa Shields again won the gold medal in the weight class up to 75 kg body weight with 3-0 point victories over Yaroslawa Jakuschina, Russia, Dariga Schakimowa, Kazakhstan and Nouchka Fontijn.

Clarissa Shields had played 78 boxing matches up to her first professional fight on November 19, 2016, of which she won 77, 19 of which by knock-outs .
