Franchon Crews (* 1987 in Norfolk, Virginia ) is an American boxer . She was runner- up in the light heavyweight division in 2012 .

Career

Franchon Crews lives in Baltimore . In her youth she was a very talented singer and songwriter. In 2004 she even took part in the American Idol talent competition for singers. She also played some basketball, athletics and softball. On the advice of her mother, she also started boxing in 2003 because she wanted to lose weight. She liked boxing so much that she soon concentrated on it, without, however, completely neglecting her musical ambitions.

In boxing, "The Heavy Hitting Diva", as her nickname is, achieved success very quickly. In 2005 she was USA middleweight champion, where she was in the final in the first round demolition winner over Christine Brown. In the same year she started at the Women's World Cup in Podolsk, but lost to the experienced Russian Maria Jaworskaja on points in the round of 16 (21:38).

In 2006 she was again USA middleweight champion, where she was narrow point winner against Allana Huggins (22:20) in the final. She was USA champion in 2007 in the middleweight division, where she again defeated Allana Huggins in the final and in 2008 in the light middleweight division . It was inactive in 2009 and 2010. In 2011, however, she made a comeback and was again USA middleweight champion, where she won the final over Alyssa Defazio on points (15:13). In 2012 Franchon Crews won the USA light heavyweight championship with a points win in the final over Tiffany Hearn and in 2013 she won her seventh USA championship with a final win over Raquel Miller (3-0 RS).

Franchon Crews was also very successful at the Pan American Championships. She won her first title in Buenos Aires in 2006 with an abandonment victory in the second round over Tamara Garcia from Argentina. In 2007 she won the middleweight finals in Duran / Ecuador over Amber Konikow from Canada by breaking off in the first round. In 2008 she won this title again. In Port of Spain / Trinidad she defeated Andreia Bandeira from Brazil in the light middleweight division on points (11: 4). After her break from competition, she was again Pan American light heavyweight champion in Cornwall / Canada in 2012, defeating Maude Bergeron from Canada clearly on points (32: 3) in the final. At the Pan American Championship in 2013 she then had to admit defeat in the middleweight finals for the first time. She lost to Yenebier Guillen from the Dominican Republic on points (7:15) and was therefore "only" the Pan-American runner-up this year.

In 2012 women's boxing was Olympic for the first time at the Games in London, but only in the weight classes up to 51 kg, 60 kg and 75 kg, i.e. the middleweight. As a result, the top female welterweight boxers, who had to gain weight, and those from the light heavyweight division, who had to lose weight, competed in the US Olympic elimination in Spokane in February 2012. As a result, the qualification was of course extremely difficult. Franchon Crews was at the start in Spokane and lost in their first fight against the 17-year-old Claressa Shields on points (19:31). However, the rules of this elimination stipulated that defeated female boxers could continue to fight until they won the tournament or lost the second time, which meant the final "out". Franchon Crews first came to a non-fighting victory over Dara Sheen and won over Tiffany Hearn on points (27:26). A loss to Raquel Miller then meant their final elimination. The Olympic middleweight champion was Claressa Shields.

Franchon Crews started in London in May 2012 at the World Championships in Qinhuangdao / China. In the light heavyweight division she defeated Sabrina Delarue, France (22: 8), Dariga Schimowa, Kazakhstan (30:12) and Timea Nagy, Hungary (22: 8) on points. In the final, however, she was defeated by the Chinese Yuan Meiqing on points (11:18). She became runner-up world champion.
