Willy Planck

Willy Planck (born December 12, 1870 in Stuttgart , † 1956 in Herrenberg ) was a German painter and graphic artist . He is considered one of the most important and productive German book illustrators of the first half of the 20th century. Many of his illustrations were also used in the foreign language editions of the books, so that the artist also became known to the international audience.

Life

Planck came from the family of Nobel Prize winner Max Planck . He attended the Realgymnasium in Stuttgart up to the sixth grade and then, from 1885, the arts and crafts advanced training school. Between 1887 and 1890 he studied at the Stuttgart Art School with Albert Kappis , Jakob Grünenwald and Gustav Igler . From 1891–1896 he studied at the Karlsruhe Art School with Gustav Schönleber , Caspar Ritter , Claus Meyer and Leopold von Kalckreuth . From 1897 he worked in Stuttgart mainly as a portrait painter and illustrator . He also sometimes painted landscapes and genre pictures . He regularly spent the summers between 1895 and 1899 (with the exception of 1898) in Rottenburg am Neckar , so that he also created a number of landscape paintings and portraits there, and therefore with his paintings at the Second Rottenburg Painting Exhibition (May 30th to 20th July in the hermitage) 1914 participated.

Artistic creation

As a painter, Planck preferred figure and landscape pictures in a post-impressionist manner reminiscent of Swabian impressionism .

As a graphic artist, Planck initially created effective art nouveau works . He later developed an unmistakable style of his own, preferring pen drawing . His best-known book illustrations include the Heidi and Karl May volumes . The illustrations for the Karl May books were also used in the Dutch, Polish and Czech editions. Willy Planck illustrated a. a. the following books:
