Frances Hodgson Burnett (born November 24, 1849 in Manchester , England , † October 29, 1924 in Plandome , New York ; born Frances Eliza Hodgson ) was a British writer .

Life

Frances Hodgson Burnett was born to a goldsmith in Manchester, England. After the death of their father, the family emigrated to Knoxville (Tennessee) in the USA in 1865 . There she began to write for American newspapers.

In 1873 she married Dr. Swan Burnett, with whom she had two sons, Lionel (* 1874) and Vivian (* 1876). In 1890 her older son died. In 1898 she divorced her husband. In February 1900 she married Stephen Townsend, who died just two years later. After 1901, Frances Hodgson Burnett lived in Long Island and Bermuda . There she became increasingly interested in Christianity , gardening and spirituality . Burnett died a few weeks before her 75th birthday in 1924.

Burnett is known and loved for their three children's books Little Lord Fauntleroy (Little Lord Fauntleroy), A Little Princess (A Little Princess) and The Secret Garden (The Secret Garden) . All three books have been filmed several times.
