Raquel Miller
Raquel Miller (born February 15, 1985 in San Francisco ) is an American boxer . In 2012 she became vice world champion in the weight class up to 69 kg body weight.
Career
Raquel Miller grew up in difficult social circumstances in San Francisco. As a teenager she had to z. For example, watch as friends of their street gang fell victim to the fighting of rival gangs and were killed. Nevertheless, with the help of sport - in those years she practiced athletics , played basketball and softball - she managed to break away from these circles. In 2003 she began to train boxing at the age of 18, but had to stop after a short time due to severe knee injuries. In 2006 she resumed training, but initially could not achieve a competitive level. In the end, however, she managed to gain a foothold in boxing. From 2008 she played a few fights, and in 2010 she won her first victory in a competition. In Ben Bautista she finally found a trainer who moved her to systematic training. She is a member of the Champ Nation Boxing Club San Francisco .
From 2011 she then played some important national competitions, in which she did very well. With these good results, she had earned the right to take part in the US Olympic qualifying tournament (Trials) in February 2012. She started in the middleweight division, the weight class up to 75 kg body weight. In this tournament she lost her first bout against the former vice-world champion in the light heavyweight Chatiqua Hemingway on points (10:16), they triumphed over Tiffanie Ward on points (23:12), also beat the reigning world champion in the welterweight Andrecia Wasson after Points (27: 6) and with another point win over Franchon Crews (26:15) won the right to compete against Chatiqua Hemingway again. But she also lost this fight on points (6:21). She did not qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games in London .
She started a week later at the USA welterweight championship and won the title with victories over Tamika Palmer (13: 4), Tara Weisshaar (29: 2) and Danyelle Wolf (10: 5). She was then used in this weight class in April 2012 at the Pan American Championship in Cornwall / Canada, where she lost in the semifinals against Myriam da Silva from Canada just on points (18:19). She won a bronze medal at this championship, which was the first medal she won in an international competition. In May 2012 she competed in the World Championships in Qinhuangdao, China . There she surprised the international boxing world with victories over Daena Stephenson, New Zealand (17: 8), Myriam da Silva (+18: 18), Bilgehan Karabulut, Turkey (11: 5), and Irina Potejewa , Russia (13:10 ), and was thus in the final battle, in which she lost against Marija Badulina from Ukraine on points.
In 2013 she started again in the middleweight division of the USA championship. There she defeated Alicia Napoleon on points in the semifinals (3: 0 judges 'votes), but lost in the final battle against Franchon Crews on points (0: 3 judges' votes).
The now 28-year-old Raquel Miller, whose boxing career is practically only three years old, intends to stay active until the next Olympic Games in 2016.
