Andrecia Wasson (born June 23, 1992 ) is an American boxer . She became the 2010 welterweight amateur world champion .

Career

Andrecia Wasson comes from Center Line (Michigan) . She has been doing a lot of sports since early childhood (athletics, soccer, American football, volleyball, basketball and swimming), but then decided to box because her father had also played this sport. She belongs to the Warrior Boxing Club Centerling . Her first coach was Mickey Goodwin, who looked after her since she was 13. Due to her talent, the powerful, stocky athlete developed into an excellent boxer who reached the national and international top class in women's boxing at the age of 17.

In 2009 she was American champion and thus at the same time "Golden Gloves" champion in the welterweight division, defeating Brittany Inkrote 7-2 in the final. At the so-called "National PAL Championships" 2009 she took 2nd place. She made her first start at an international championship at the Pan American Championships in Guayaquil / Ecuador . There she defeated Susan Haas from Canada with 15:14 points and lost in the final against Andreia Bandera from Brazil just as tightly with 4: 5 points.

In 2010 she was again US-American welterweight champion in Colorado Springs with a points win over LaTarisha Fountain (8: 6) and came in the fights for the "Golden Gloves" in Hollywood , which took place shortly before the championship, on the 3rd Place when she lost to Nisa Rodriguez after winning points over Johanna Willis (5-0) in the semifinals.

As an American champion, she was then used at the 2010 Women's World Cup in Bridgetown / Barbados . There she won, despite her relatively low international experience due to her age of only 18 years, with victories over Kanoli Wyatt, Canada (17: 3), Swetlana Kossowa , Russia (5: 2), Naomi Fischer-Rasmussen, Australia (demolition victory due to injury at 16: 1 points for Wasson), Yang Tingting , People's Republic of China (25: 4) and Savannah Marshall , England (5: 4) the world championship. This success is all the more remarkable because a few weeks before this championship she lost her coach Mickey Goodwin, who died at the age of 52. She was then looked after by Ser Garcia.

In 2012 women's boxing in four weight classes is Olympic for the first time at the Olympic Games in London . The welterweight is not one of them. It can therefore be assumed that Andrecia Wasson will switch to middleweight (up to 75 kg body weight) by then.

At the first screening tournament of the US Boxing Association for the 2012 Olympic Games in London, which took place in Toledo (Ohio) in November 2011, Andrecia Wasson actually started in the middleweight division. She won there on points over Farrar Fallon (12:10), Danielle Wolfe (12: 6) and Raquel Miller (12:10) and was defeated by Claressa Shields (13:31), who was only 16 at the time . In the actual Olympic Trials in Spokane in February 2012, she won over Dara Shen (34: 9), but then lost to Claressa Shields (12:31) and Raquel Miller (6: 7) and thus had no chance to qualify for the Olympic Games.
