Savannah Marshall (born May 19, 1991 in Hartlepool , Durham , England ) is an English boxer . She became world middleweight champion in 2012 .
Career
Savannah Marshall grew up in Hartlepool and attended English Martyrs and Sixth Form College and later earned the BTEC National Diploma in Sports from Hartlepool PE College. She started boxing at the age of 12, after having played the usual school sports. She was supported by her father and joined Hartlepool Headland BC . At the beginning of her career she mostly had to train with boys as there were no girls who boxed. Amanda Coulson , also from Hartlepool and a multiple medalist in boxing at international championships, served as a model in these early years . Since joining the English national team of amateur boxers, she has trained mostly at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield . Your trainer there is Tim Coulter.
At the end of her junior years in 2008, for lack of opponents, she had only fought 10 fights, all of which she won. In 2009 she became English welterweight champion with a demolition victory in the 1st round over Sian Hemming . She was then used by the English Boxing Association at the championship of the European Union in Pazardzhik / Bulgaria, where she won points over Katarzyna Furmaniak , Poland (5: 2), Ralitza Christowa, Bulgaria (4: 0) and Tamara Garcia , Spain ( 15: 2) the title straight away. The victorious fight against Tamara Garcia was only her 15th fight in her career. At the European Championships in 2009 in Nikolajew / Ukraine she was not used because she wanted to be carefully developed as a very young boxer.
In 2010, she won the Welterweight Prime Minister's Cup in Ankara , defeating Tatjana Iwaschenko (5: 2), Elena Kolzowa, Kazakhstan (2: 0), Simge Genc, Turkey (4: 0) and Katarzyna Furmaniak (2: 1) four very good opponents. At the Minoan Women's Cup in Heraklion / Greece , she won on points (7: 1) over Andrea Strohmaier from Germany , but suffered a narrow point defeat (4: 6) in the semifinals against Swetlana Kossowa from Russia and took third place. At the championship of the European Union in 2010 in Keszthely / Hungary she won the welterweight division over Walentina Penewa, Bulgaria (4: 2) a. Marichelle de Jong , Netherlands (4: 2), but lost in the semifinals against local hero Bianka Nagy from Hungary (4: 6) and therefore came in second.
The 2010 World Cup in Bridgetown / Barbados became the highlight of her career . She won there welterweight over Justyna Sroczynska, Poland (17: 2), the reigning European champion Lotte Lien , Norway (6: 2) u. Marichelle de Jong (14: 4) each on points. In the final, she met the American Andrecia Wasson , who was a year younger than her, and to whom she lost 4: 5 points in an even fight, making her runner-up in the world championship. The following year she started at the EU championships in the middleweight division (up to 75 kg), but was eliminated in the first fight against Mária Kovács , Hungary (14: 9). At the European Championships in 2011 , Marshall then achieved after victories a. a. via Lidia Fidura , Poland (13: 6), the semifinals, which she lost against Nouchka Fontijn , Netherlands (15: 7), and thus won a bronze medal. In 2012, Marshall's greatest success followed: after Siegen a. a. via Claressa Shields , United States (14: 8), Lotte Lien, Norway (13: 2), Nadezhda Torlopova , Russia (18:10), and Elena Vystropova , Azerbaijan (17:15), she became world middleweight champion in Qinhuangdao . It was all the more disappointing for her that she was eliminated from the Olympic Games in London in the first fight against Marina Wolnowa , Kazakhstan (16:12).
2013 Marshall won with victories a. a. over Fidura and Fontijn (each 3: 0) the EU championships and with a final victory over Li Qian , China (3: 0), the World Combat Games . In 2014 he then followed victory at the Commonwealth Games , where she defeated Ariane Fortin , Canada , 2-1 in the final, before Marshall was eliminated in the first fight against Yaroslava Yakushina, Russia (3-0) at the World Championships . At the 2015 European Games, which took place for the first time , Marshall also lost in the first fight against the later gold medalist Fonijn (3-0). The 2016 Olympic year also began disappointingly for Marshall: at the European Olympic qualification tournament, she was eliminated in the first fight against Erika Guerrier, France (2-0), and thus missed the qualification for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . However, Marshall was able to achieve this at the 2016 World Championships when she won after victories a. a. Vystropova (3: 0) and Li Qian (3: 0) reached the semifinals, in which they defeated Fontijn with 3: 0 judges votes and thus won a bronze medal.
