Marichelle de Jong (born January 31, 1978 in Gouda ) is a Dutch boxer . She won a welterweight medal at the 2010 World Championships in Bridgeport / Barbados .

Career

Marichelle de Jong, a professional graphic designer who lives in Waddinxveen , started the Korean defense sport Tang Soo Do at the age of 12. In this sport she also competed and participated in workshops. In 2002, at the age of 24, she started boxing with the Gouda Boxing Association . In 2003 she played her first competition in Groningen . In 2005 she became the first Dutch welterweight champion with a points win over Emina Hodzic, followed by four other Dutch championship titles.

She now belongs to a boxing club in Benthuizen and mostly trains at the Van 't Hof sports studio in Rotterdam , the Rowe Gravesteijn sports studio and the Terbregge wellness center. Her international career began at the 2005 European Championships in Tønsberg / Norway . She won her first fight there in the weight class up to 66 kg body weight over Teres Szabo from Hungary on points (29: 7), but lost in the quarterfinals to Oleksandra Koslan from Ukraine on points (11:32) and thus finished 5th . She also started at the 2005 World Cup in Podolsk . There she won over Pauliina Virta from Finland by breaking off in the first round, but met Oleksandra Koslan again in the quarterfinals, who again lost on points, but the defeat was much narrower with 13:17 points, as in the European Championship.

In 2006 she again took part in the European championship in the weight class up to 66 kg body weight in Warsaw . She met Aya Cissoko from France in her first fight and was defeated by this on points (23:37), with which she finished 9th. At the World Cup this year in New Delhi , she met Russian champion and co-favorite Irina Potejewa in her first fight , who she surprisingly defeated on points (25:22). In the quarter-finals she met Aya Cissoko again and lost again, but her defeat with 14:19 points was very honorable, especially since Aya Cissoko finally became world champion in the further course of the competition.

In 2007 Marichelle de Jong succeeded in the Witch Cup in Budapest in the weight class up to 66 kg body weight in the final, a point victory over the reigning world champion in this class Mary Spencer from Canada , who was quite clear with 18:10 points. In October 2007 she won her first medal at an international championship at the European Championships in Vejle / Denmark . She won there over Oleksandra Koslan, Ukraine (9: 2) and Ronja Holgersson from Sweden (16: 5) and was defeated in the semifinals against Irina Potejewa with 2: 3 points and therefore reached 3rd place.

Also in 2008 Marichelle de Jong achieved an outstanding victory at the Witch Cup. She beat there Amanda Coulson from England, a multiple medalist at World and European Championships on points (16:10). At the 2008 World Cup in Ningbo / China, however, she again lost to Irina Potejewa on points (8:10) and therefore ended up in 9th place with all the losers in the round of 16. In 2009 she did not take part in any international championships. In 2010 she won a bronze medal at the championship of the European Union in Keszthely / Hungary in the welterweight division after a defeat in the semi-finals against Savannah Marshall from England (2-4). She won the same medal at the World Championships in Bridgeport / Barbados . She won there over Nelly Oluch, Kenya (5: 0) and Nurcan Goksel from Turkey (9: 7) on points and was defeated again on points (4:14) in the semifinals against Savannah Marshall.
