Mary Spencer (born December 12, 1984 in Wiarton , Ontario , Canada ) is a Canadian boxer . In 2005, 2008 and 2010 she became the amateur world champion in the weight classes up to 66 kg and 75 kg body weight ( middle weight ).

Career

Mary Spencer has Native American ancestors. She and her family moved to Windsor , Ontario shortly after their birth . There she attended the Roseville Public School and the WF Herman Secondary School. Already in these schools she was active as a hardworking athlete and played soccer, volleyball and basketball. From the age of 10 to 17, she played in various basketball teams and dreamed of becoming a professional basketball player. During a talent search, the coach of the Canadian women's boxing selection Charlie Stewart recognized her excellent athletic skills and persuaded her to start boxing training. She was 17 when she joined the Windsor Amateur Boxing Club (ABC) and began regular boxing training.

After five months of training, she played her first official fight in 2002. In 2003 she was Ontario champion in the weight class up to 66 kg KG, the weight class in which she fought until 2009, defeating former Canadian champion Jennifer McMurter in the final by breaking off in the 2nd round. In 2004 she was the first Canadian champion in the same weight class. Shortly afterwards, the first international assignments took place. She won a tournament in Cascia / Italy with a points victory in the final over Sweden's Anna Ingroth and was also winner of the Taiwan World Invitational in Taipei , where she Lin Ye-Wing, Taiwan by demolition in the second round and Kelly Halling from New Zealand to Points (31: 8) defeated.

In 2005 Mary Spencer was again Canadian champion. Then she won the title at the Pan American Championships in Buenos Aires with victories over Elizabeth Queredo, USA (11: 7) and Celeste Peralta, Argentina (12: 5). Well prepared, she went to the World Cup in Podolsk / Russia . There she defeated Aruna Mishra from India (28:12), Oleksandra Koslan , Ukraine (29:18) and the two-time world champion Irina Sinezkaja , Russia, on points and thus became world champion straight away.

By winning points over Amanda Beaulieu (27: 4), she was again Canadian champion in 2006. She also won again at the Pan American Championship, which took place again in Buenos Aires. There she won over Lisa Kuronya , USA by breaking off in the 3rd round and over Romina Inguez, Argentina by breaking off in the 2nd round. At the 2006 World Cup in New Delhi , she was unable to defend her title. She won there over Lisa Kuronya on points (23: 8) and over Diana Bigalowa from Kazakhstan by breaking off in the first round, but lost in the semifinals to Oleksandra Koslan on points (6: 9) and therefore had to win a bronze medal at the World Cup be satisfied.

In 2007 Mary Spencer managed to win the fourth title at a Canadian championship with a demolition victory in the second round over Erin Krekoski and then the third title win at a Pan American championship at the Pan American championships in Durán / Ecuador . She won this title with a points win over Lisa Kuronya (13: 5) and a demolition win in the 2nd round over Wendy Allan from Trinidad & Tobago . In the same year she then suffered a defeat at the witch tournament in Pécs / Hungary. She lost in the final fight of this tournament against Marichelle de Jong from the Netherlands on points.

In 2008 she got back on the road to success. Although she missed the Canadian championship, she was again Pan American champion in Port of Spain on Trinidad & Tobago with points wins over Andreia Costa from Brazil (8: 1) and Vanessa Jackson from the United States (4: 0). The world championship took place in 2008 in Ningbo / China. Mary Spencer won the world title there for the second time and defeated on the way to this success Amanda Coulson from England (13: 4), Irina Potejewa, Russia (8: 6), Ri Suk Yong, North Korea (7: 2) and in the final Vanessa Jackson (9: 2) each safely on points.

In 2009 it was announced that women's boxing would be Olympic for the first time in London in 2012 . However, only in the weight classes up to 51 kg, 60 kg and 75 kg body weight. Since Mary Spencer absolutely wants to take part in these Olympic Games, she had to decide in which weight class she will start there. At first she planned to slowly reduce her body weight in order to be able to start in the weight class up to 60 kg (lightweight) and already took part in some competitions that had their weight limit at 64 kg body weight. However, she soon had to realize that it was not possible to train to 60 kg without a significant loss of substance and therefore decided to build up muscle mass and to start in the weight class up to 75 kg body weight (middle weight) in the future.

At the Canadian Championships in 2009 she started in the weight class up to 64 kg body weight and won the title with a point victory over Desni Boisvert. After that she did not start at any other championships this year, and there were no world championships this year anyway. At the renowned Ahmet Comert tournament in Istanbul in 2009 , she then started in the middleweight division for the first time. Although she did not reach the upper weight limit of 75 kg by far, she was immediately competitive in this class, as the result of this tournament showed. She won in Istanbul over Irina Sinezkaja from Russia (5: 1), Lilija Durnejewa from Ukraine (6: 1) and over the 2008 world middleweight champion Li Jinzi from China (4: 2) on points and became the tournament winner.

In 2010 Mary Spencer lost at the Canadian championship in the final against the world champion from 2008 in the weight class up to 70 kg body weight Ariane Fortin on points (7:10). In the following eliminations for participation in the international championships of this year (Pan-American championship and world championship she won over Ariane Fortin and therefore represented Canada at these championships. The Pan-American championships took place in Brasília in 2010. Mary Spencer defeated Andreia Bandeira from Brazil there in a hard-fought encounter with a score of 7: 7 through the auxiliary points, and in the final battle she was the demolition winner in the 1st round over Yenebier Guillen from the Dominican Republic. At the World Cup in Bridgetown / Barbados, she then showed that her decision in this future Weight class to start was right, because she was won with a points win over Anna Laurell , Sweden (9: 2), a non-fighting win over Tamara Garcia from Spain and point wins over Lilija Durnjewa, Russia (8: 3) and defending champion Li Jinzi, the she almost outclassed with 14: 2 points, also in this weight class sweet world champion.

In 2011 she did not start at any international championship, but with a point win (6: 3) in the final over Ariane Fortin, she became Canadian champion again. She won this title in 2012, again beating Ariane Fortin on points (18:12) in the middleweight division. At the Pan-American Championship in 2012 in Cornwall / Canada she won the middleweight division over Alma Nora Ibarra, Mexico (12: 2) and over Yenebier Guillen, Dominican Republic (11: 9) on points. In the final, she met the US American Claressa Shields, who was completely unknown in the international boxing rings, and was clearly defeated on points (14:27).

There was also a rude awakening for Mary Spencer at the 2012 World Cup in Qinhuangdao / China, because she lost there in the round of the last 32 female boxers against Anna Laurell on points (11:18), with which she was eliminated and together with all the losers of this Round only came in 17th place. At the Olympic Games in London, where women's boxing competitions were held for the first time, she was automatically qualified as World Champion 2010. She met the Chinese Li Jinzi in the quarter-finals in London and lost to this on points (14:17), which brought her to 5th place and thus remained without a medal.

Despite this unsatisfactory result, Mary Spencer continued her career in 2013. She started at the Pan American Championship in Puerto la Cruz / Venezuela. She lost there in the semifinals against Yenebier Guillen on points (12:15).
