Nouchka Fontijn (born November 9, 1987 in Rotterdam ) is a Dutch boxer . She was European champion in 2014 and second in the middleweight division in 2016 .

Career

Nouchka Fontijn has been active in sports since early childhood. She did gymnastics, played country hockey, skied, was a track and field athlete and began Taekwondo at the age of 16, which she practiced until she was 20. In this sport she already had great successes and made it to the 1st Dan. In January 2007 she also started boxing, so only at the age of 20. Originally, she wanted to do boxing and taekwon-do side by side. However, she was quickly convinced by her trainer at the Rotterdam Abdel Fikri performance center that she must concentrate on boxing if she is to achieve outstanding success. Her athletic trainer is Hans Kroon and since she has also been training frequently at the Sportcentrum Papendal, she also often practices with Nigel Davies. Nouchka Fontijn lives in Schiedam. She studied physiotherapy at the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, where she graduated in 2013.

She was Dutch middleweight champion in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

She made her first start at an international championship in August 2010 at the 5th EU championship in Keszthely / Hungary. She met ex-world champion Mária Kovács from Hungary in the round of 16 , against whom she lost on points. One month later, in September 2010, she competed in the 6th AIBA Women's World Championship in Bridgtown / Barbados. She defeated there middleweight Yunebier Guillen, Dominican Republic and Tiffany Hearn , United States and met in the quarterfinals again on the experienced Maria Kovacs, against whom she lost again on points. It took a good 5th place.

In June 2011 Nouchka Fontijn won a medal at an international championship for the first time at the 6th EU championship in Katowice. She defeated it in the middleweight division Erika Guerrier from France and for the first time her old rival Maria Kovacs on points. In the final she lost to Lidia Fidura from Poland on points and won the silver medal. She won a silver medal in October 2010 at the European Women's Championship in her hometown of Rotterdam. On the way to this success she defeated Desislawa Lasarowa, Bulgaria, Maria Kovacs and Savannah Marshall from England. In the final, the relatively narrow defeat against Nadezhda Torlopa from Russia (11:13 points).

In January 2012, Nouchka Fontijn defeated her compatriot Marichelle de Jong in the final of the 1st Nations Women's Cup in Sombor / Serbia and thus won the right to start the 7th AIBA World Championship for women in Qinhuangdao / China in May of this year, which was important because there was an opportunity to qualify for participation in the Olympic boxing tournament in London. In Qinhuangdao she first defeated Hurrican Boyle from New Zealand on points, but lost in the round of 16 against Marina Wolnowa from Kazakhstan just on points (18:19), so she was eliminated and only came in 9th place. The Olympic Games in London in 2012 were thus a long way off. In 2013 there were no world and no European championships in women's boxing. In July 2013, however, there was the 7th EU Championship in Keszthely / Hungary, in which Nouchka Fontijn was also at the start. She won the middleweight division over Sinead Kavanagh, Ireland and over Nives Radic, Croatia, on points. In the final battle she lost to Savannah Marshall and therefore had to be content with a silver medal again.

At the 2014 European Championships in Bucharest, she finally managed to win the European Championship gold medal with victories over Anna Laurell from Sweden, Jaroslawa Jakuschina , Russia, Tímea Nagy from Hungary and Sarah Scheurich from Germany, all top-class female boxers . At the 2014 World Championships , Fontijn u. a. with a victory over Khadija Mardi , Morocco (3: 0), the semi-finals, which she lost against Li Qian , China (2: 0), and thus won a bronze medal. In 2015 Fontijn won with victories a. a. via Marshall (3: 0), Scheurich (3: 0) and Laurell (3: 0) the gold medal at the first ever European Games . It was all the more disappointing for Fontijn that she was eliminated from the European Olympic qualification tournament in 2016 in the first fight against Christine Desmond, Ireland (2-0). Fontijn then made up for the missed qualification for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro at the World Championships in the same year when she after victories a. a. via Lidija Fidura (3: 0) and Savannah Marshall (3: 0) reached the final, which she then lost to Claressa Shields , United States (3: 0), and thus won the silver medal.

At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Nouchka Fontijn defeated Savannah Marshall in the middleweight division, and Li Qian on points, making the defending champion Claressa Shields in the final. Claressa Shields retained the upper hand in this fight as well and won 3-0 judges' votes over Nouchka Fontijn, who deservedly won the silver medal.

  • Middle weight, weight class up to 75 kg body weight
  • RS = judges' votes (Note: at the end of 2013 the "point machines" that were customary but controversial were abolished by the AIBA. Since then, three judges have been evaluating again without technical aids)
