Anna Rosalie Eleonora Laurell Nash (born February 12, 1980 in Klågerup , Svedala ) is a Swedish boxer . She became world middleweight champion in 2001 and 2005.

Career

Anna Laurell grew up in Lund in a large but wealthy family. She attended high school and began studying mathematics at Lund University at the age of 18 , but soon switched to chemistry. In 1997 she started boxing training with three friends at the boxing club in Lund ( BS Lund ), initially only "to keep fit". However, she soon found pleasure in boxing and began to train seriously with Thomas Lundberg. Later John Brinkell and Jormen Kalmendal were added as coaches. Her outstanding feature is her excellent left leading hand. In 1998 she fought her first fight.

In 1999 she took part in the Swedish women's championships for the first time and won the Swedish championship in the weight class up to 75 kg body weight with a point victory over Åsa Sandell , who was by then much better known . In the same year she took part in the Feenix tournament in Turku / Finland , one of the first major international women's boxing tournaments ever to be held. She lost there, however, against the much more experienced Veronica Simmons from the United States by breaking off in the 1st round. Also in 2000 she suffered a defeat at the Feenix tournament in the first round against Jennifer Grenon from Canada . At these tournaments she learned a lot and developed noticeably. So quickly that she reached the middleweight final at the European Championships in Saint-Amand-les-Eaux in 2001 , which were the first ever European Championships to be held, in which, however, she beat Svetlana Andrejewa from Russia on points ( 9:13) lost. As vice European champion, she went to the first women's world championship in Scranton in the United States a little later . There she managed to become world champion with victories over Robyn Labuda, USA , Guo Shuai, People's Republic of China and Anita Ducza from Hungary . Anita Ducza then became one of her main competitors in the further career of Anna Laurell, who fought countless duels.

In 2002 Anna Laurell began training as an oncologist at Lund University. So she had to limit her training a bit. At the beginning of 2003 she went to Paris for a few months and continued her studies there. She trained there at the boxing club BAC 9 Paris . She also took part in the European Championship in Pécs / Hungary in 2003 , but was not in top form because of the circumstances described. After all, she reached third place in the middleweight division behind Natalja Ragosina , Russia and Anita Ducza and so won another medal. In 2004 she won the European Championship back in Riccione / Italy . In the middleweight final she defeated there Anita Ducza on points.

The year 2005 was extremely successful for Anna Laurell. Although she lost the final fights against Olga Slawinskaja , Russia and Anita Ducza at the international tournaments in Saint Petersburg and Pécs , she was at the European Championships in Tønsberg / Norway and at the World Championships in Podolsk each successful in the middleweight division. In Tønsberg she won the final over Marija Jaworskaja , Russia on points (31:20) and in Podolsk she won the final battle over Olga Novikowa from Ukraine on points (39:22) after she had already defeated Marija Jaworskaja in the semifinals by breaking off id 2 Had struck round.

In 2006 she became Swedish champion again, outclassing her opponent Karolina Persson with 44: 1 points in the final battle. However, she fell ill shortly afterwards and was unable to compete in any further competitions in 2006. In 2007 she recovered again and won the European Championship in Vejle / Denmark , where she beat her opponents Marija Jaworskaja (13: 3) and Olga Nowikowa (20: 6) on points. Shortly thereafter, she also won the European Union Championship in Lille , where she won the final against Anita Ducza just on points (7: 6).

At the 2008 World Championships in Ningbo / China, Anna Laurell won the middleweight division over Chimere Taylor from Trinidad (10: 2) and over Anita Ducza (8: 2) on points, but had to go clearly on points in the final of the young Chinese Li Jinzi ( 1: 9) and became vice world champion. In 2010 Laurell started again at the World Championship in Bridgetown / Barbados , but lost in the round of 16 against Mary Spencer from Canada on points (2: 9) and ended up in 9th place, while Mary Spencer became World Champion. The 2011 European Championships also ended early for Laurell. She lost in the quarterfinals to the later gold medalist Nadezhda Torlopova , Russia (15:10). She was only able to win the Scandinavian championships this year. The next world championships followed in 2012 , at which Laurell won after victories a. a. via Mary Spencer (18:11), Lidia Fidura , Poland (20:14), and Andrea Strohmaier, Germany (24: 8), reached the semi-finals. She lost this to Elena Vystropova , Azerbaijan , very tightly with 16:15 points and won the bronze medal behind Savannah Marshall , United Kingdom , and Vystropova. Since the two European quota places for the 2012 Olympic Games had already been taken, Laurell was not able to qualify directly. However, she was then invited to the games in London as a deserved fighter by the AIBA . Here she first beat the Australian Naomi Fischer-Rasmussen in the round of 16 with 24:17 points before she was eliminated in the quarter-finals against the later Olympic champion Claressa Shields , United States (18:14) and thus finished fifth.

In 2013 Laurell took a break. At the European Championships in 2014 she lost her first fight against the later gold medalist Nouchka Fontijn , Netherlands , with 3-0 judge votes. In 2015 Laurell won the Northern European Championships with a final victory over Love Holgersson, who also comes from Sweden. In the same year, however, she lost a final of the Swedish championships for the first time in many years. Nevertheless, Laurell was nominated by the Swedish Association for the European Games 2015 and won here after victories a. a. over Lidia Fidura (2: 1) and a final defeat against Nouchka Fontijn (3: 0), the silver medal. In the 2016 Olympic year, Laurell reached the European Olympic qualification tournament after Siegen a. a. again over Fidura (3: 0) and a final defeat against Yaroslava Yakushina , Russia (2: 1), second place and thus qualification for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . The 2016 World Championships ended for Laurell in the round of 16 against Li Qian , China (3-0).

Anna Laurell, who works as a scientist at Lund University, has been named Woman Boxing Ambassador by the World Association of Amateur Boxers AIBA for her services to women's boxing.

Explanations

  • WM = World Championship, EM = European Championship
  • Medium weight, up to 75 kg, light heavy weight, up to 81 kg body weight
  • KG = body weight
  • EU = European Union
  • Until 2008 there were up to 15 weight classes in women's boxing, after a reform there have only been 10 weight classes since 2009, which are largely aligned with the weight classes of men and also have the same names
  • Until 2012, the so-called point machines were used, which calculated a point victory, since 2013 three judges have made the decisions per fight
