Ariane Fortin (born November 20, 1984 ) is a Canadian boxer . In 2006 and 2008 she became the amateur world champion in the weight class up to 70 kg.

Career

Ariane Fortin is from St. Nicholas in the state of Quebec in Canada and belongs to the French-speaking part of the Canadian population. She started boxing in 2001 at the Levis Olympic Boxing Club . The student is trained by Benoit Martel, Mike Moffa and Andrew Kulesza.

In 2002 and 2003 she took 2nd place in the Canadian Women's Championship in the weight class up to 66 kg body weight. In 2004 she was the first Canadian champion in the weight class up to 70 kg body weight (KG). Four more Canadian championship titles followed in this weight class by 2008. After a weight class reform she won the welterweight title in 2009 (up to 69 kg) and in 2010 she became Canadian middleweight champion, defeating two-time world champion in the weight class up to 66 kg, Mary Spencer on points (10: 7 ).

In 2004 she started in international wrestling for the first time and won three boxing tournaments in Kansas City , Cascia / Italy and Hualien / Taiwan , each in the weight class up to 70 kg. At the Pan American Championships in Buenos Aires in 2005 , she won her first championship title at an international championship with victories over Nadja Santos from Brazil and Tiffany Junot from the United States. Shortly afterwards she started at the 2005 World Cup in Podolsk / Russia . She won there over Karen O'Brien from Australia (30:26) and Nurcan Carkici from Turkey (45:41) on points and faced the Russian Olga Slawinskaja (Kl. Up to 70 kg), against whom she was one Point defeat (22:37) had to accept and thus became Vice World Champion.

Also in 2006 Ariane Fortin won the Pan American Championships, which took place again this year in Buenos Aires. In the weight class up to 70 kg, she won Akima Stocks from the United States (37:20) and Andreia Bandeira from Brazil (21:15) on points. In November 2006, she succeeded in New Delhi in the semifinals of the World Cup against Olga Slawinskaja, the revenge. She defeated them clearly with 22:11 points and was thus in the final battle against Akima Stocks, who she also clearly beat on points (17: 2). She was the new world champion in the weight class up to 70 kg.

In 2007 she won again at the Pan American Championships in Duran / Ecuador . She defeated Jackie Davis from the United States on points (23: 2) and Andreaia Bandeira by breaking off in the 2nd round. There were no world championships that year. In 2008 Ariane Fortin lost at the Ahmet Comert tournament in Istanbul in the final against Irina Potejewa from Russia on points (4:11), but a few weeks later she won the tournament at the Witch Cup in Pécs , where she stopped Nurcan Carkci in the final id struck 1st round. At the World Championships in November 2008 in Ningbo / People's Republic of China , she succeeded in breaking off the first round over Grace Parks from the United States and winning points over Elena Wystropowa , Russia (13: 3), Nuran Carkci (16: 5) and the Local hero Yang Tingting , China (11: 6) to repeat her success of 2006 and again become world champion in the weight class up to 70 kg body weight.

In March 2009, Ariane Fortin was defeated in the welterweight class (up to 69 kg body weight) in the final of the Ahmet Comert tournament again against Irina Potejewa on points (9:10). But four months later she won the international tournament in St. Petersburg in the final in the same weight class over Svetlana Kosova from Russia on points (15: 4) and was thus the tournament winner. She was the winner again in October 2009 at the Pan American Championship in Guayaquil . For the first time she started in the middleweight (8 to 75 kg body weight). In 2010 Ariane Fortin finally moved to the middleweight division. The reason was that at the 2012 Olympic Games in London , competitions in women's boxing in the three weight classes of flyweight (up to 51 kg body weight), lightweight (up to 60 kg body weight) and middleweight (up to 75 kg body weight) will take place for the first time. As a result, of course, many female boxers try to get at home in these three weight classes. For this reason, not only Ariane Fortin switched to the middleweight division in Canada, but also the two-time world champion in the weight class up to 66 kg, Mary Spencer . These two boxers then faced each other in 2010 in the final battle for the Canadian middleweight championship. Ariane Fortin won this fight on points (10: 7). Shortly after this championship, the Canadian Boxing Association started an extra qualification for the upcoming international championships, which took place in Halifax. In this fight Mary Spencer won over Ariane Fortin just on points (11:10). Mary Spencer then represented Canada at the World Championships in Bridgeport / Barbados and promptly became world middleweight champion. Ariane Fortin only started at the Ladies Nikolayev City Cup in 2010 and beat Russian champion Inna Sagaidakowskaja (9: 1) in the semifinals and Ukrainian champion Lilija Durnejewa (9: 4) in the final by points.

In December 2010 Ariane Fortin and Mary Spencer faced each other again in the middleweight finals at the early Canadian Championship for 2011. Mary Spencer won again on points (6: 3). The fight for the ticket to the 2012 Olympic Games between Ariane Fortin and Mary Spencer has not yet been decided. Ariane Fortin will certainly do everything possible to qualify for it after all.
