Alexander Gennadjewitsch Jagubkin

Alexander Gennadjewitsch Jagubkin ( Russian Александр Геннадьевич Ягубкин ; born April 25, 1961 in Donetsk , Ukrainian SSR , USSR ; † August 7, 2013 ibid.) Was a Soviet amateur boxer .

Career

Alexander Jagubkin started boxing in 1974. His first international success was a third place at the Junior World Championships in 1979 in Yokohama , where he lost in the semifinals against the American Marvis Frazier .

Jagubkin won the European heavyweight championship three times in his career ( 1981 in Tampere , 1983 in Varna and 1985 in Budapest ). He defeated Jürgen Fanghänel in the final in 1981 and Arnold Vanderlyde from the Netherlands in 1983 . At the European Championships in Turin in 1987 , he competed in the super heavyweight division and was able to reach the final fight in this weight class, but lost to Ulli Kaden there .

In 1982 he took part in the World Championships for the first time and was able to secure the title in the title fights held in Munich with another final victory over Fanghänel. At the 1986 World Championships in Reno , however, he lost to Michael Bentt in the quarter-finals .

Jagubkin's other successes were second place at the 1981 World Cup in Montreal and the World Cup victories in 1983 in Rome and 1985 in Seoul , there with a semi-final victory over Bentt. He was not allowed to take part in the 1984 Olympic Games because the Soviet Union boycotted these games.
