Viktor Petrovich Ulyanich ( Russian Виктор Петрович Ульянич , English spelling Viktor Petrovich Ulyanich ; born February 26, 1949 in Krasnoarmiysk , Donetsk Oblast ; † November 27, 2014 ) was a Soviet boxer . He was European champion in 1973 and vice-European heavyweight champion in 1975 .
Career
Viktor Ulyanich started boxing in 1964 in Rostov-on-Don at the Vodnik sports association. He joined the army at the age of 18 and from that point on started for an army sports club. With a height of 1.88 meters and a weight of approx. 100 kg, the dark-haired Ulyanitsch was a massive, but also technically adept "real" heavyweight. After finishing his boxer career, he worked as a trainer in the youth and junior sector.
In 1969 he became the Soviet junior heavyweight champion. From 1970 he started regularly at the Soviet senior championships. He was denied major successes until 1974. He was usually eliminated in the round of 16 or even earlier and therefore never got beyond 9th place in those years. The first medal win at a Soviet championship he succeeded in 1974 when he reached the semifinals, in which he, however, lost to Yevgeny Gorstkow on points. He also reached the semi-finals of this championship in 1975. He was defeated in this but against Pyotr Sajew and therefore had to be content with 3rd place again. The best result at a Soviet championship he then achieved in 1979. He reached the final that year, in which he lost against Choren Indschejan on points and thus became Soviet runner-up champion. So he never succeeded in his career in becoming the Soviet senior champion.
Compared with the Soviet championships, Viktor Ulyanich's international career was much more successful. In 1970 he won the Chemistry Cup in Halle (Saale) in the final over Bernd Anders , GDR , on points. In 1971 he took second place in the championship of the armies of the Warsaw Pact countries (SKDA championships) in Miskolc / Hungary after losing points in the final against Alexander Wasjuschkin, USSR , and in 1972 he won this tournament, which was held in Frankfurt ( Or) took place, in the final about his compatriot Gadschudin Gadschijew on points.
In 1973 he lost in the Soviet European Championship elimination in Lvov in the semifinals against Gennady Kokurin on points, but was nevertheless nominated for the European Championship in Belgrade . He justified this nomination with victories over Peter Mullen, Ireland , Ion Alexe , Romania and Peter Hussing , Germany and winning the European title.
In 1974 he won again in Sofia at the championship of the armies of the Warsaw Pact countries, where he defeated Vyacheslav Andreyev, USSR, in the final battle. At a tournament in October 1974 in Izmir he won the final over Andrzej Biegalski from Poland clearly on points.
In 1975 Wiktor Uljanitsch was then again in Katowice at the European championship at the start. He won there over Jürgen Fanghänel , GDR, and Garfield McEwan, England , each on points, but lost in the final against Andrzej Biegalski, who was supported by a fanatical audience, on points and was "only" runner-up in Europe. That was also the end of his international boxer career.
