Pyotr Ivanovich Sajew
Pyotr Ivanovich Sajew ( Russian Пётр Иванович Заев ; born July 26, 1953 in Ssjolki, Lipetsk Oblast , † November 29, 2014 in Lipetsk ) was a Soviet boxer . He won at the Olympic Games 1980 in Moscow a silver medal in the heavyweight division .
Career
Piotr Sajew started boxing as a teenager in the Dynamo sports community. At that time he belonged to the Dynamo Lipetsk sports club . He later joined the Red Army, where he rose to the rank of officer and became a member of the central sports club of the army, CSKA Moscow . As an adult he was relatively small and light for a heavyweight with a height of "only" 1.79 meters and a weight of about 87 kg.
In 1973, at the age of 20, he took part in the Soviet senior championship for the first time and was able to defeat such good and successful boxers as Igor Vysotsky and Viktor Ulyanich in the quarter-finals and semi-finals . In the final of this championship he was unlucky because he had to be taken out of the fight against Yevgeny Gorstkow in the second round due to an injury. In 1975 he defeated in the semi-finals of the Soviet championship again Viktor Ulyanich and was defeated in the final again Yevgeny Gorstkow, this time on points. In those years the so-called "Absolute Master" was also determined in the Soviet Union. In this championship, the best pugilists of the three heaviest weight classes (medium, light and heavyweight) took part. In 1975 Piotr Sajew managed to win this championship with a points victory in the final over Mikhail Subbotin.
In 1976 and 1977, as well as in the determination of the absolute champion in 1977, he took second place at the Soviet championships. In the final battles he was defeated by Viktor Ivanov (1976) and twice by Yevgeny Gorstkow (1977). In the semi-finals he had previously beaten Yevgeny Gorstkow (1976), Igor Vysotsky (1977) and Gennady Kokurin (1977). In 1978 and 1979 he was absent from the Soviet championship, but in 1980 he managed to become Soviet champion. He defeated it in the second round Vyacheslav Yakovlev , in the semi-finals Yevgeny Gorstkow and in the final Alexander Jagubkin on points.
In international championships (World and European Championships, Olympic Games) Pyotr Sajew was not used in the years up to 1979. He won the 1978 14th championship of the Warsaw Pact countries (SKDA championship) in Lwow and beat Ion Cernat from Romania in the semifinals and Roberto Gomez from Cuba in the final with 5-0 judges' votes on points.
Piotr Zajew celebrated the greatest success of his career at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow . He beat there in the heavyweight Aziz Salihu from Yugoslavia (5-0), Francesco Damiani , Italy (5-0) and Jürgen Fanghänel from the GDR (5-0) each on points and faced the Cuban Teófilo Stevenson in the final battle , who had him towered over the top almost by a head. Zajew delivered a courageous fight to Stevenson and only just lost on points (1: 4) but still won the silver medal.
