Viktor Ivanov started boxing as a teenager. He also became a member of the Dynamo Donetsk sports club . He joined the Red Army and was a member of the military police. Towards the end of the 1970s, when he was no longer a member of the Soviet national team of amateur boxers, he was transferred to Uzbekistan and started for the Urozhai Namangan sports club . With a height of 1.86 meters he always started as an adult in heavyweight and from 1981 in super heavyweight .

In 1975 he became Soviet junior heavyweight champion in the U 20 age group. In the same year he also started at an international tournament in Halle (Saale) and defeated there in the final Roland Köber from the GDR by techn. KO in the 3rd round. In November 1975 he took part in a competitive trip for the national team to the United States. He went to the start in three international matches in New York , Cincinnati and Las Vegas and defeated his US opponents Greg Sorrentino, Deron Anthony and Richard Schanner in the first round by knockout or by breaking off.

In 1976, at the age of just 19, he became the Soviet heavyweight champion. He defeated while Vyacheslav Alexejew on points, came to a non-fighting victory over Dimitri Tichomolow, beat Yuri Sudakow on points and defeated the experienced Pyotr Sajew by breaking off in the 1st round. Because of these good results, he was then used at the Olympic Games in Montreal . He came there in the preliminary round to a point win over Jürgen Fanghänel from the GDR (3: 2 judges' votes), but lost in the round of 16 against Atanas Suwandschijew from Bulgaria on points (1: 4), which he was eliminated and only came in 9th place . In December 1976 Viktor Ivanov had to accept a knockout defeat in the third round in the fight against Nikolai Axjonow when determining the so-called "absolute master", in which the best boxers of the three heavy weight classes were at the start.

In 1978 Viktor Ivanov won the championship title at the 19th Championship of Police of the Warsaw Pact States in Lodz . He came in the final to a victory over Jerzy Skroczek from Poland.

At the Soviet championships he was only at the start again between 1980 and 1983. But he could no longer build on the success of 1976. During those years he won a medal only in 1982 with a 3rd place in the super heavyweight division, which was introduced in 1981. He was also not used on an international level.
