Jürgen Fanghänel (born August 1, 1951 in Limbach-Oberfrohna ) is a former German amateur boxer.

career

Jürgen Fanghänel was an eight-time GDR heavyweight champion. For the first time he won the title in 1972 as a boxer of SC Karl-Marx-Stadt , in 1973 he took second place. After moving to SG Wismut Gera , he won the national championship seven more times from 1975 to 1981.

1973 Fang Hänel took part in a European championship for the first time. In the title fights in Belgrade , however, he was eliminated in the first round of the tournament, where he was defeated by Peter Hussing , the representative of the Federal Republic of Germany , on points. In 1975 in Katowice he failed in his first fight, this time against Viktor Ulyanich from the Soviet Union .

The 1977 European Championships were more successful in his home hall , where he was able to move into the finals and finished the tournament in second place after a premature defeat against Evgeny Gorstkow. At the 1979 European Championships in Cologne , he took third place on a trip to the super heavyweight division, and was again defeated by Peter Hussing in the semifinals. In 1981 in Tampere he boxed again in the heavyweight division and achieved another second place, this time he lost the final fight against the Russian Alexander Jagubkin .

In 1978 Fanghänel was third at the Amateur World Cup in Belgrade. He defeated Peter Hussing in the course of the tournament by knockout in the second round, but had to admit defeat on points to the Yugoslav Dragomir Vujković in the semifinals. The 1982 World Championships held in Munich , he finished second, he was defeated again in the final against Alexander Jagubkin.

Fanghen's greatest success was the bronze medal at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow , he lost the semifinals against Pyotr Sajew from the Soviet Union.

After his boxing career, Fanghänel worked as an educator in a youth home in Gelsenkirchen.
