Tony Tubbs (born February 15, 1958 in Cincinnati , Ohio ) is an American heavyweight boxer and WBA world champion. He is the brother of the much more limited Nate Tubbs . He called himself TNT first , but since this was Tony Tucker's nickname , he decided not to use it.

amateur

In 1978 he took part in the World Cup in Belgrade , but lost in the second round of the tournament against Teófilo Stevenson . In 1979 he won the World Cup in New York as well as the national “ Golden Gloves ” tournament and was US national champion. His record was 240-13.

professional

In 1980 the counter boxer made his professional debut after the USA had not participated in the Olympic Games in Moscow as hoped . He had a very effective one-two combination; However, punch and chin were rather average. Throughout his career he has struggled with drug and motivation problems.

He defeated James Smith in March 1985 and won a short time later on April 29, 1985 the WBA title against Greg Page , but lost it in his first title defense in January 1986 to Tim Witherspoon .
