Bruce Samuel Seldon (born January 30, 1967 in Atlantic City , New Jersey ) is an American boxer .

career

Seldon's amateur record is given as 20 wins out of four losses. In 1988 he started his professional career. He had a good basic speed and was strong, but had few takers and often lacked courage and fighting spirit. In January 1991 he had to go down against José Ribalta for the first time in his career, but then won through a technical knockout in round three. In April 1991, however, he went KO against Oliver McCall in the ninth round and suffered his first defeat. McCall later surprisingly became the title holder of the WBC , but at that time he was a completely blank slate with a record of 15 wins in four defeats and one defeat in the second professional fight.

In the next fight in August of this year, Seldon suffered the next defeat, against the undefeated silver medalist of the Seoul Olympic Games, Riddick Bowe by first-round knockout.

After a knockout win against Jesse Ferguson , he first boxed a number of relatively unknown opponents. In October 1992 he was put by his promoter Don King against former WBA title holder Tony Tubbs , who had drug problems at the time and had just been knocked out against an opponent with a record of 12-10 in the first round. But here too it failed because of the known problems; Tubbs, by no means a great puncher (all important wins on points) knocked Seldon to the ground, took away all fighting spirit and won high on points. After all, Seldon was able to defeat former WBA title holder Greg Page (then already 11 defeats) early in 1993 .

In 1995, the WBA world title became vacant as reigning world champion George Foreman refused to defend his title against mandatory challenger Tony Tucker and instead took on Axel Schulz . On April 8, 1995, Tucker and Seldon, who took second place in the WBA rankings at that time, fought in Las Vegas for the vacant WBA title. Seldon fought one of his strongest fights and surprisingly won by dropping out after the seventh round because of a severe swelling in Tucker's eye, which, in the opinion of the ring doctor, obstructed his vision too much. Tucker had never lost prematurely up to this point and was u. a. got by with Tyson and Lennox Lewis .

He completed a successful title defense against Joe Hipp before taking on Mike Tyson on September 7, 1996 . Tyson won by knockout on round one. After this disappointing fight, in which the old problems were decisive again (in the slow-motion replay there were no direct hits before the second rainfall), Seldon announced his resignation.

In March 2004 he wanted to know again and reported against Otis Tisdale, whom he knocked out in round three, back. After another win against Lenzie Morgan, he also wanted a rematch against Mike Tyson, who tried a comeback in July 2004. However, since Seldon was knocked out against Gerald Nobles in the ninth round and Tyson's comeback attempt also failed, this encounter did not take place. In October 2005, he attempted another comeback when he faced Tye Fields . However, he was also knocked out in the second round. In February 2007 he returned to the ring again and defeated Marcus Rhode by knockout in round 1. After two more wins against unknown opponents he lost in September 2008 against the unbeaten Kevin Johnson by knockout in round 5. After two more wins followed in July 2009 a knockout loss in round 9 against Fres Oquendo .
