In 1986 he lost to the only 19-year-old Mike Tyson in his first fight, which was televised, by abandoning in round 6.

In his only fight for a world title he lost on May 22, 1993 in the second round against Riddick Bowe by knockout . However, he was able to win against two later heavyweight world champions, Buster Douglas and Ray Mercer , each one victory on points.

His last fight as a professional he played on January 30, 1999 against Andrzej Gołota and had to admit defeat here as well.
