Hasim Rahman Shariff (* 7. November 1972 in Baltimore , Maryland , USA ) is a retired American professional boxer in the heavyweight and former World Champion of organizations WBC , IBF and IBO .
Career
After only a short amateur career, in which he boxed Joe Mesi twice (one win, one loss), he turned pro in December 1994. The first notable opponents in 1996 were Ross Puritty and 40-year-old Trevor Berbick , ex-world champion of the WBC Association, whom he defeated on points. 1997 points victories against Obed Sullivan and Jesse Ferguson followed .
He suffered his first defeat as a professional on December 19, 1998 against the powerful David Tua by technical knockout in the tenth round. This fight result was controversial because Rahman, clearly in the lead, received an effective hit shortly after the gong at the end of the ninth round, but the referee did not grant him the five-minute recovery time he was actually entitled to because of the irregular hit. So Rahman went to the next round, still clearly battered, whereupon and then after Tuas hit more, the fight was broken off.
He suffered another controversial defeat in 1999 against the Russian Oleg Maskayev - again Rahman was clearly ahead, again he was knocked out. The point of contention this time: he was hit so hard that he fell out of the ring by the ring ropes. After ten seconds the referee stopped the count and declared Maskayev the winner; according to the rules, however, he should have counted to twenty in this special case. However, Rahman was not ready to fight again even after this time.
In May 2000 he competed against Corrie Sanders and won the fight by technical knockout in the seventh round, in a wild exchange of blows he was on the ground himself before.
Surprising knockout win against Lennox Lewis
On April 22, 2001 Hasim Rahman caused a sensation in boxing. In Carnival City ( South Africa ) as a clear outsider, he completely surprisingly knocked out the clearly favored world champion Lennox Lewis in the fifth round and thus won the titles of the WBC and IBF associations . Allegedly Lewis hadn't trained properly because he made a brief appearance on the set of the film Ocean's Eleven and hadn't properly prepared for the high altitude conditions in South Africa. He had also relied on a rematch clause in his contract.
Rahman signed after the win with the promoter Don King and tried to avoid a rematch with Lewis. However, he lost a corresponding lawsuit brought by Lewis and therefore had to defend the title against Lewis only seven months later. The fight on November 17, 2001 in Las Vegas was clearly dominated by the concentrated acting Lewis and ended in the fourth round with a knockout loss for Rahman. Both duels were preceded by verbal arguments in front of the cameras, up to and including a fight between Lewis and Rahman during a press conference.
On June 1, 2002 Rahman lost in an elimination match of the WBA federation against the ex-world champion Evander Holyfield . After an accidental headbutt from Holyfields on lap eight, Rahman's forehead was so badly swollen that the fight had to be stopped. In the opinion of two of the three judges, he was behind and therefore lost due to a technical point decision. Holyfield was already considered "obsolete" at this point because he had passed the zenith of his career.
Rahman then denied a rematch against David Tua in March 2003. Despite being overweight (118 kg compared to his usual 105 to 110 kg fighting weight) Rahman showed a good performance, for almost all journalists he was considered the winner, but the fight was scored as a draw. On December 13, 2003 followed a defeat in the fight for the interim WBA title against John Ruiz .
Rahman had been in the ring for four fights and two years without a win, so in 2004 he first boxed against a number of build-up opponents. In November 2004 he defeated the Australian Kali Meehan by technical knockout in the fourth round. Meehan had earned respect through a good performance and a controversial, narrow point defeat to Lamon Brewster , but had not beaten any opponent of any name. In his only fight of 2005, Rahman lackluster defeated Monte Barrett on points.
Without a fight, won the WBC title again
After the world championship fight against Vitali Klitschko , which was planned for April 2005 , was postponed several times due to Klitschko's injuries and finally did not take place due to the Ukrainian’s temporary resignation, Rahman was again appointed world heavyweight champion by the World Boxing Council (WBC). In the course of a bankruptcy declaration , Rahman was able to dissolve his contract with Don King and sign with his arch-rival Bob Arum .
On March 18, 2006, he defended the WBC title with a draw against the favored James Toney . A referee had seen him with 9-3 rounds, the broadcaster HBO with 8-4 rounds. The other two judges thought the fight was even (6-6 rounds). In the meantime, the Russian Oleg Maskayev qualified as a compulsory challenger of the WBC Association for a world championship fight and went on August 12, 2006 against Rahman. Rahman could not win this rematch either, like seven years before, he lost the match, and with it the WBC title, through a technical knockout.
Then he got four wins in 2007 against average opponents. On July 16, 2008, he met James Toney again. In a relatively even fight, Rahman suffered a severely bleeding laceration over his left eye after a head collision. Since Rahman assumed that the fight would not be counted if it was abandoned, he gave the referee to understand that he could not continue boxing because of the injury. However, Toney was initially declared the winner by technical knockout. A few days later, however, the result of this fight was canceled by a decision of the California State Athletic Commission, as the number of four rounds required for victory was not reached. Rahman could not win the fourth rematch of his professional career, his record: two defeats (Lewis, Maskajew), a draw (Tua) and a fight without evaluation (Toney).
World Cup fight against Wladimir Klitschko
When the Russian Alexander Powetkin injured himself in October 2008 in preparation for his planned world championship fight on December 13, 2008 in Mannheim against the Ukrainian Wladimir Klitschko , Klitschko kept the fight date and Hasim Rahman, who was fifth in the IBF world rankings, as Substitute opponent obliged. The fight took place in Germany. The now 36-year-old Rahman finally had nothing to oppose Wladimir Klitschko's jab and went down after Klitschko's left hook in the sixth round. After a few more impact hits in the seventh round, the referee stopped the fight. Rahman lost by technical knockout in the seventh round.
World championship fight against Alexander Powetkin
In 2012, after a few successful fights in his home country, but also a ring break of over a year, Rahman got another World Cup chance, this time against Powetkin, who had meanwhile been declared World Champion of the WBA. The fight took place in Hamburg on September 29th. Rahman, who looked poorly trained, lost in the second round without a chance through TKO . The referee had stopped the fight as a result of a heavy series of hits Powetkins.
In his last fight, Rahman lost on June 4, 2014 in Auckland, New Zealand by unanimous decision on points in a three-round match against Anthony Nansen.
