Professional career

Barrett began his career as a professional boxer only in 1996 at the age of 25. In his 22nd professional fight he met Lance Whitaker on August 28, 1999 and lost for the first time by a point defeat. On June 15, 2000 Barrett appeared in a title defense of the heavyweight world champion Lennox Lewis in a preliminary fight against Wladimir Klitschko and had to accept the first KO defeat of his career. He was knocked to the ground five times before the fight was finally stopped by the referee in the seventh round.

Then he managed a series of five wins in a row; he beat the former world heavyweight champion Tim Witherspoon , among others . Then he met Joe Mesi and lost just on points. Both Mesi and Barrett went down in this fight. In his next fight, he defeated Dominick Guinn, who was undefeated at the time and was heavily hyped by HBO, and was therefore able to recommend himself for an elimination match for the WBC Association. This fight came on February 5, 2005 against the undefeated, but also unknown Don King boxer Owen Beck ; Barrett dominated Beck completely and won by technical knockout in the ninth round.

Since the reigning WBC world champion Vitali Klitschko could not defend his title at this point due to a long series of injuries, the WBC started a fight between Barrett and Hasim Rahman for the interim world championship. The winner of this fight would have been Vitali Klitschko's next opponent. Barrett lost that fight on August 13, 2005 clearly on points. Since Klitschko ended his career a few months later due to his injury, Rahman was declared WBC world champion. Nikolai Valuev's challenge in the WBA heavyweight contest on October 7, 2006 failed. He was defeated in the eleventh round by a technical knockout. Barrett received a purse of $ 175,000 for the fight. In July 2007 he surprisingly lost against the club fighter Cliff Couser in the 2nd round by knockout. The rematch then won Monte Barrett by KO in round 2. On February 2, 2008 Barrett won again prematurely in round 2 against Damon Reed. On June 28, 2008, Barrett rose to the ring against Tye Fields . Fields had only lost once so far, winning 37 of his 41 wins early. Barrett finally won this fight by a knockout after just 57 seconds.

On November 15, 2008 he was the first heavyweight opponent of David Haye, who had risen from the cruiserweight division . Barrett lost this fight after several knockdowns in the 5th round by technical knockout.

On October 10, 2009 he went after only two rounds against Odlanier Solís KO

The end of his career, which was then announced, was almost crowned by a victory over David Tua , whom he brought into great trouble on July 17, 2010 over 12 laps. Tua went down on the last lap. The fight was however counted as a draw. Barrett reversed his decision, made immediately after the fight, to stop professional boxing, however, and faced Charles Davis on January 22, 2011, this fight also ended in a draw. On August 13, 2011, there was a renewed clash with Tua, the Barrett could clearly win on points despite a rainfall in round 12. His last fight on July 5, 2012, he lost to Shane Cameron by knocking out in round 4. This defeat was surprising because Cameron was defeated by Tua in 2009 by knocking out in round 2.
