David Deron Haye (born October 13, 1980 in London ) is a former British professional boxer . In his career he was world heavyweight champion of the WBA and cruiserweight world champion of the associations WBA, WBC and WBO .
Life
David Haye grew up in London. He has two siblings. His father is Jamaican and his mother is English . Haye is married and has one son.
amateur
David Haye played as an amateur over 90 fights, of which he won over 80, more than 40 of them prematurely. He has been trained by Adam Booth since he was 16.
At the annual Multi Nations Tournament in Liverpool he was second in 1998 and first in 1999 in the light heavyweight division. Haye also took part in the 1999 World Championships in Houston , but did not get there in the light heavyweight division beyond the second round, he failed because of the eventual winner, the American Michael Simms .
At the Chemistry Cup 2000 he was defeated in the light heavyweight Giacobbe Fragomeni , who came to the semifinals, on points. At the Feliks Stamm Tournament 2000 in Warsaw he lost in the heavyweight division against the eventual winner Andreas Gustavsson from Sweden.
At the international Copenhagen Cup in 2000 he won the heavyweight gold medal. The 2001 World Cup in Belfast was also successful for him . There he defeated Sebastian Köber in the heavyweight division and reached the final, but lost there prematurely against Cuban Odlanier Solís .
At the international Trofeo Italia he won the heavyweight gold medal. He defeated Jaroslavas Jakšto in the final .
Professional career
Cruiser weight
In 2002, Haye turned pro. He won his development fights, but had to go down against the Congolese Lolenga Mock for the first time in his professional career. He won the British cruiserweight title in November 2003. On September 10, 2004 he surprisingly lost against the 40-year-old veteran Carl Thompson by technical knockout in the fifth round. Nevertheless, he managed on December 16, 2005 to win the European Championship against the multiple title holder from Ukraine Alexander Gurow . In 2006 he defeated the undefeated Dane Lasse Johansen, later that year the undefeated former European amateur champion Giacobbe Fragomeni , who had defeated him as an amateur.
In the meantime, Haye had risen to become a mandatory challenger for the WBC title and was able to challenge world champion Jean-Marc Mormeck on November 10, 2007 . After he had been knocked to the ground in the fourth round in this fight and was behind on points, he succeeded in the seventh round of victory by technical knockout and thus winning the WBC and WBA cruiserweight titles. When Haye was also able to win a union fight against WBO title holder Enzo Maccarinelli by technical knockout in the second round on March 8, 2008 , he now held the titles of three world cruiserweight associations.
Heavyweight
Haye then dropped his title and announced that he would switch to heavyweight. He played his first fight on November 15, 2008 against Monte Barrett . He defeated this after five rounds with a technical knockout.
David Hayes' goal in the heavyweight division was to win one or even several world championships for the Klitschko brothers. Through numerous verbal and media provocations, including holding the severed head of Wladimir Klitschko in his hand in a photo montage on the cover of Men's Health magazine , he tried to force a title fight against the Klitschkos without having to make a lengthy effort in the world rankings having to fight upstairs. After Vitali Klitschko defended his title against Juan Carlos Gómez , the management of Wladimir Klitschko announced that a title fight between Haye and Wladimir Klitschko would take place on June 20, 2009 in the Gelsenkirchen Veltins-Arena . As a further provocation, David Haye wore a T-shirt at various press conferences that showed him holding the two severed heads of the Klitschko brothers in his hand in a winning pose. However, after a back injury that Haye sustained while training, the fight was canceled. Haye quickly recovered from his controversial back injury. In fact, Haye got out of the contract with Wladimir Klitschko for reasons that were never fully clarified. Then there were discussions about a new date for the fight. Since Wladimir Klitschko had to deny two compulsory defenses in a row, he was initially no longer an option. Instead, Vitali Klitschko again agreed to play against Haye. The date of the fight was set for September 12, 2009. The venue should be the Frankfurt Commerzbank-Arena . David Haye also canceled this fight because he and his trainer and manager Adam Booth did not agree with the terms of the contract.
WBA world champion
Shortly afterwards it became known that David Haye and '' Sauerland Event '' had agreed on a fight against WBA world champion Nikolai Valujew . Haye defeated the Russian on November 7, 2009 in Nuremberg on points (114: 114, 112: 116, 112: 116) and became world heavyweight champion of the WBA. In the fight, Haye mostly moved in reverse and only acted with a few counter attacks while the slower Valujew tried to catch Haye. Since this was seldom successful, the audience saw a less intense fight, in which more than thirty seconds often passed between two attempts to strike. In the last seconds of the twelfth lap, Haye brought the 2.13 meter tall Russian to the edge of precipitation with a left hook.
In the first defense of the WBA title, Haye prematurely defeated former WBA world champion John Ruiz on April 3, 2010 . In the fight, which took place in the MEN Arena in Manchester , Ruiz had to go to the ground in the first seconds of the first round, but was able to collect himself and fight on until the ninth round, before his coach did that after further knockdowns and relative lack of chances for his protégé Threw in towel.
On November 13, 2010, Haye successfully defended his WBA title against British southpaw Audley Harrison . Former friend and sparring partner of Haye, who at the Summer Olympic Games of Sydney gold medal in 2000 at super heavyweight won had often to fight in his professional career with ups and downs. He recommended himself for a world championship fight when he spectacularly knocked out the British Michael Sprott in a European championship fight , behind on points, in the twelfth round. The following duel was preceded by many verbal arguments; most of them related to the former friendship between Haye and Harrison. At the beginning of the fight, the war that had been announced did not materialize. After the first two rounds, in which the boxers hardly dared to attack and seldom hit, the spectators in the MEN arena acknowledged the fight with boos. In the third round, Haye attacked aggressively. After a series of violent blows and a rainfall, the referee broke off the one-sided duel. Haye won with a technical knockout in the third round.
Association of titles against Wladimir Klitschko
After the Harrison fight, the management of Haye and Wladimir Klitschko began again to negotiate a union title. After Klitschko had to cancel a fight against Hayes compatriot Dereck Chisora in December 2010 because of an abdominal muscle injury, the parties agreed on June 25 or July 2, 2011 as possible dates for a fight. Klitschko initially wanted to catch up with the fight against Chisora in April 2011, which again led to the long-awaited unification of the title being canceled because Haye did not consider it possible that Klitschko could complete two world championship fights within nine weeks. Klitschko's abdominal muscle injury healed more slowly than previously thought, and the fight against Chisora was again canceled. In the meantime, Hayes' compulsory defense against Ruslan Chagayev was canceled because of his controversial hepatitis B illness, which paved the way for renewed negotiations with Klitschko. Both parties finally signed the contracts and agreed on July 2, 2011. In addition to Germany , the USA , the United Arab Emirates , Switzerland , Russia , Monaco and South Africa were available as possible venues. The decision was finally made on the 57,000-seat Volksparkstadion in Hamburg . In the fight, the WBO and IBF titles held by Klitschko were combined with that of the WBA and thus the belts of three of the four most important boxing associations, which is relatively rare in the heavyweight division. Haye lost the fight by a clear loss on points. As the reason for the defeat he named an injury, which he presented in the ring. His trainer Adam Booth was of the opinion that the fight would have been different without injury.
End of career and comeback
After multiple announcements, Haye declared his career over on his 31st birthday (October 13, 2011). However, he announced his comeback in May of the following year. A fight against Dereck Chisora in Upton Park of the London soccer club West Ham United was agreed for July 14, 2012 . Since his opponent was banned from the British federation because of their fight at a press conference and it was not foreseeable whether Haye would receive a British license again because of this incident, both competed with a Luxembourg license for this fight. Haye, who competed in sneakers and not with the usual boxing boots, won in the 5th round by knockout. against the clearly inferior Chisora. He then announced that he would next play against Vitali Klitschko .
Possible end of career after an operation
After an operation on the injured shoulder in November 2013, the fight against Tyson Fury planned for February 8, 2014 had to be canceled. Since the operation did not bring the desired success, the treating doctors advised Haye to end his career.
Another comeback and end of career
In November 2015, Haye announced his comeback after a two-year break. It was also announced that Shane McGuigan would be his new coach. Against the Australian Mark de Mori rose on January 16, 2016 in The O 2 Hayes first fight after a three and a half year break, which Haye won by knockout in the first round. In his next fight on May 21, 2016, he again defeated the previously undefeated Swiss Arnold Gjergjaj in The O 2 with a technical knockout in the second round. After several provocations, on March 4, 2017, the O 2 saw a tough duel against his compatriot and former cruiserweight world champion Tony Bellew , which Haye lost prematurely in the eleventh round. The fight for revenge should finally take place on December 17, 2017 for the fourth time in a row in The O 2 , but this was canceled due to a shoulder injury Hayes. As an alternative date, both boxers met on May 5, 2018, the venue remained the same.
On June 12, 2018, Haye ended his career.
Scandal at press conference
On February 18, 2012, David Haye was present as a television commentator for a British broadcaster during the fight between Dereck Chisora and Vitali Klitschko in Munich . At the subsequent press conference, Haye Vitali Klitschko called for a fight, but Klitschko's manager Bernd Bönte denied it, as such a fight had already failed once due to financial disagreements. Suddenly Chisora interfered, insulted Haye and in return challenged him to a fight. After mutual abuse, Chisora left his place on the podium and ran towards Haye. In front of the cameras, the two hit each other with bare fists, Chisora was knocked out for a short time. Members of both camps took part in the dispute, which the security service could not bring under control. Haye also injured Chisora's trainer with punches and hit a camera tripod, but hit his own trainer Adam Booth, who was holding back a member of Chisora's team. This suffered a laceration on his forehead.
While Chisora was subsequently arrested on suspicion of bodily harm, Haye was able to escape to Great Britain and thus escaped arrest. A police spokesman announced that Haye was being investigated for bodily harm and dangerous bodily harm. In 2014, Haye had to answer before the Munich district court.
Since David Haye no longer had a boxing license due to his official resignation, he faced no consequences from the British Boxing Association. The British Boxing Board of Control could refuse him a new license if he should apply for one again at some point.
