Audley Hugh Harrison (born October 26, 1971 in London , United Kingdom ) is a retired British heavyweight boxer. His greatest achievement was the 2000 Olympic super heavyweight victory in Sydney .
amateur
Harrison started boxing in 1991 at the age of 19. As an amateur, he played 54 fights, of which he won 46. In 1997 and 1998 he became British super heavyweight champion. In 1998 he took part in the European Championship in Minsk , but failed in the first fight against Sjarhej Lyachowitsch , but won the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, which took place in the same year . Participation in the 1999 World Cup in Houston was not very successful either, where he lost in the second round of the tournament to eventual winner Sinan Şamil Sam .
His greatest success was at the Olympic Summer Games in Sydney in 2000. With victories over Alexei Lesin , Olexij Masikin , Paolo Vidoz and in the final against the Kazakhs Muchtarchan Dildabekow , he won the gold medal in the highest weight class.
Professional career
After the win, he turned pro and nicknamed himself “A-Force”. Harrison was ridiculed as "Fraudley" and "A-Farce" because of his phlegm and his sensitive chin. He had many enemies in the English media. The criticism was not always fair, as his opponents Mark Krence, Richel Hersisia and Tomasz Bonin were still unbeaten at the time of the fights.
He was injured several times, which hampered his development, another problem for him was that he was already relatively old when he started his professional career. The first loss in his professional career was on December 10, 2005 against Danny Williams , he went down in this fight in the eleventh round. In his next fight against Dominick Guinn he lost again on points.
For December 9, 2006, a meeting with Matt Skelton was planned. However, he broke his hand in preparation for this fight and had to cancel at short notice. Arch-rival Danny Williams was then committed again as a substitute opponent. Harrison dominated surprisingly clearly and won in the third round by knockout.
On February 17, 2007 Harrison went against Michael Sprott in the fight for the so-called EU championship in the third round difficult knockout. He only returned after a break of more than a year in the ring and won two fights against opponents , but without to convince. On December 12, 2008 he lost over ten rounds against the undefeated but little respected Northern Irishman Martin Rogan on points.
On October 10, 2009, he won the Prizefighter TV tournament organized by the British television station Sky Sports , in which he competed in three three-round fights in one evening and was able to win. Harrison should then fight against the Poland Albert Sosnowski for the European heavyweight championship. Since Sosnowski resigned the title in March 2010 for a World Cup chance against Vitali Klitschko , Harrison's conqueror Michael Sprott, who had lost four out of six fights since his victory against Harrison, was nominated for the duel for the now vacant EBU belt. The fight on April 9, 2010 in London could Harrison, behind on points, win by knockout in the twelfth round. On November 13, 2010 he lost a WBA world championship fight against title holder David Haye by technical knockout in the third round.
On May 26, 2012 Harrison returned with a win by TKO in the 4th round over Ali Adams back in the ring. He played his last fight on April 27, 2013 against Deontay Wilder , which he lost after a desolate performance in the first round by knockout. He then announced his retirement from active boxing.
