Professional career

His professional debut took place on April 15, 2000. His trainer was Fritz Sdunek , his managers were Ahmet Öner and Klaus-Peter Kohl at the Universum boxing promotion . In 2006 Sam then switched to Arena Box Promotion , which his manager Öner re-founded. Sam lived in Hamburg , was married and had a daughter.

On October 17, 2002 he won the European title by defeating Poland's Przemysław Saleta . Sam became the first Turkish boxer to win an EM title in a weight class higher than light welterweight. He then defended the title against the slightly favored Danny Williams , whom he knocked to the ground three times in the sixth round and was able to defeat prematurely, as well as Julius Francis.

In a fight in the USA against the Cuban Juan Carlos Gómez in September 2003, however, Sam suffered his first defeat and even went down in the course of the fight. He also lost the next defense of his European Championship title on February 14, 2004 against Luan Krasniqi .

After he had won his next seven fights, including against Lawrence Clay-Bey and Peter Okhello , he entered an elimination match for the WBC association for the right to challenge the WBC title holder against Oleg Maskayev . However, Sam lost clearly on points and also suffered a broken jaw in the course of the fight .

On June 16, 2007, at the first professional boxing event in Turkey for 27 years, he played another WBC elimination match against 42-year-old Oliver McCall . Looking poorly trained and starting with the highest weight of his career (115 kg), he suffered a deep laceration under his left eye early in the fight and finally lost on points.

After three more fights, all of which Sam was able to finish victoriously, he boxed on July 4th, 2008 in Ankara for the vacant European title against the Italian Paolo Vidoz . This duel, which Vidoz dominated over long distances with his jab , was initially rated as a draw. After the fight, there were tumultuous scenes around one of the judges, who then had to flee the hall. This judge is said to have changed his rating after the end of the fight to the disadvantage of Sam. After Sam's boxing stable, the Arena Box-Promotion , lodged a protest with the EBU , the latter finally declared Sam the winner and new European champion just two weeks later, but with the order for a rematch between the two opponents within 90 days. However, this never happened because Sam renounced the European title a few days after this decision.

Sam's comeback attempts then failed because of various health problems, for example a gallstone operation in 2009. In December 2010, he had to be treated in the intensive care unit of an Istanbul hospital for cirrhosis of the liver caused by a hepatitis disease . He died of cirrhosis on October 30, 2015, leaving behind a wife and two children.
