Peter Okhello (* 19th June 1972 in Kampala ) is a Ugandan professional boxer in the heavyweight division .

Career

Okhello was an amateur five-time Ugandan champion before turning pro in Japan in 1997 . Since there are only a few heavyweight boxers in Japan, Okhello had difficulties getting good training partners, the opponents were mostly signed from overseas. In his third professional fight he defeated Marcus Rhode prematurely, but then lost to Toakipa Tasefa from New Zealand over a distance of twelve rounds on points. As an amateur or professional, he had never been in the ring for more than three laps before.

Against the unbeaten New Zealander Kali Meehan he was knocked out in the third round in November 1999, after he had managed to knock down in the first round. He then took a 15-month break from boxing. It wasn't until 2001 that he returned to the ring. He won his next six fights and then competed in Jersey City , in his first fight outside of Japan, against former cruiserweight title holder Imamu Mayfield . However, he lost again on points.

He then managed a series of six early wins, including against Roger Izonritei , brother of David Izon , before boxing against Sinan Şamil Sam in June 2005 and, despite a knockdown in the twelfth round, again lost on points.

On December 10, 2006 he lost in Moscow in the first heavyweight world championship fight held in Russia against WBC title holder Oleg Maskayev clearly on points. Two of the judges rated the fight 108-120, Okhello could not win a round.
