Kalivath Gerald Meehan (born March 9, 1970 in Ovalau , Fiji ) is an Australian heavyweight boxer .

Professional career

After a relatively short amateur career with a record of 23-5, the former rugby league player became a professional boxer in 1997. In June 1999, he won the Australian Heavyweight Title, which he held for over a year before finally resigning it in November 2000. His first better-known opponent was Peter Okhello from Uganda, whom he defeated in Japan by knockout in the third round. In June 2001 he suffered his first defeat. He lost the fight for the Commonwealth title against Danny Williams from Great Britain in London by a technical knockout in the first round after Williams had knocked him down twice.

After Meehan was able to win the next six fights, he got the chance to fight for the title on September 4, 2004 against WBO world champion Lamon Brewster . Meehan lost this fight in Las Vegas only narrowly and controversially on points. In his next fight in November of the same year he fought against the ex-world champion Hasim Rahman , but lost to him through a technical knockout in the fourth round. After this defeat, some development battles followed against unknown opponents. In October 2007 he defeated the American DaVarryl Williamson prematurely.

Despite a subsequent 21 months of inactivity, the last time he played a fight in August 2008 , Meehan , who was under contract with Don King , stayed high in the WBA world rankings thanks to King's influence in the WBA federation and was for an elimination match for the mandatory right of challenge against the Uzbeks Ruslan Chagayev nominated. The fight against the former WBA title holder took place on May 22, 2010 in the Rostock city hall and was clearly won by Chagayev over twelve rounds on points.
