Zhantai (English Platform , Chinese  站台 , Pinyin Zhàntái  - "platform") is a film by the Chinese director Jia Zhangke from the year 2000. The film is named after a Chinese pop song from the 80s ("A long and empty platform" in Chinese  长长 的 站台 , Pinyin Chángcháng de zhàntái ).

action

The film is set in and around Fenyang , Jia Zhangke's hometown. The story of an artist troupe is told, which at the beginning of the film (1979) is still performing propaganda pieces. After the opening of the People's Republic, the group is privatized and moves from gig to gig across the country as the " Shenzhen All Star Rock 'n' Breakdance Band".

The plot describes the complicated relationship between Cui Mingliang (Wang Hongwei) and Yin Ruijuan (Zhao Tao) as well as the relationship between Zhang Jun (Liang Jingdong) and Zhong Pin (Yang Tianyi). In the foreground, however, the change in China in the 80s through the change in musical styles is described in the course of the film, less through the development of the actors. CineAction even sees "culture as the most visible 'actor' in the film."

There are also marginal acts that take place in the places where the troupe appears, for example it is said that Cui's cousin Sanming has to work in a coal mine in order to earn money.

Movie style

Long shots with few camera movements are characteristic of the film, there are only a few close-ups, instead the camera usually stays away from the actors and in some scenes the actors cannot even be seen, only the dialogue can be heard. As a result, "the actors remain unfilled and seem impassive and closed."
